I've never quite understood why guns are supposed to be a 'conservative' issue... it doesn't follow to me that just because I am strongly pro-gun, I ought to be in favor of mingling my government w/ religion, against gay rights, against abortion, for drilling in the arctic whatzit, pro-corporate, anti-union, or anything else. In fact, I can't get all of those things to link naturally together at all, no matter how hard I try... and the same goes for so-called 'liberal' things.

Just convenient labels so that we can rant and call names rather than discuss; each is an epithet, rather than a descriptor, to those on the other side.

I personally'll try to continue looking at each issue individually and make my decisions as best I can.

Oleg's site and the thread

I think it was locked because of the antis. There are two or so on the Democratic Unerground that turn every thread into a flame fest of insults. I've got them on ignore, but I wish a moderator would take them out for a while.

ROFLMAO! Best part of the thread.

Some moron posts this about the pink pistols

By the way, just as one example of the outright LIES on this "reallly great site"....

Actually liberals like Martin Luther King and Jesse Jackson did, non-violently.. And what does the inbred remnant of the Klan peddle in public these days? Why the same horse???? as this dishonest "patriot."

To which another poster had the smarts to reply with....

I bet many a southern black man, upon finding the Klan on his lawn, simply read them some excerpts from an MLK sermon and then watched them ride off into the distance.

Priceless!

LOL...

Every time I think the DU has crossed the point of no return into complete uselessness, they will come up with a thread like that, and demonstrate that at least one or two members over there have some sort of common sense remaining.

I do enjoy watching Benchley chase his tail on just about any topic involving guns over there. That guy is entirely pathetic.

Hmmmm...one prob with that picture...the rifle looks like an SKS. I'd have to guess there weren't a whole lot of Soviet-bloc weapons floating around Alabama back then.

Agreed. Its not so much that he disagrees with RKBA. There are a lot of intelligent and articulate people who are anti-RKBA. Its just that he is not numbered among them.

The man is a living example of how to use circular arguments, logical fallacies, appeals to emotion and ad hominem attacks in debate.

He's a laugh riot.

Mike

Just who is Mr. Benchley? Is there a chance that it's the great Bryan Miller of CeasefireNJ fame? Hmmm. Is that the guy who's disgracing the honorable memory of his brother who was an FBI Agent tragically killed in the line of duty? The very same brother who probably took his oath of office, to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies both foreign and domestic, seriously.
Could be. Your brother would be so proud. DISGRACEFUL!

I have to wonder if MrBenchley is actually an adult. If adult by age then certainly adolescent in manner. Sounds like a petulant little child throwing a temper tantrum.

You'd be amazed at the more disgustinly liberal people I work with then, who are hardly teenagers or fresh out of college. They can hardly form cogent arguments and their whole basis for credibility is that they went to college. :what:

I tried backing out and running a search but apparently you can only use the search feature if you're a "donor" to the DU site.

I wonder if the person who wrote:

...has ever been on the receiving end of real racism. I highly doubt it. I have. It isn't pretty and it's rarely as 'in your face' as a lot of people think. Just try being half NDN married to a full blood NDN living in SD.

Serenely singing "We shall overcome" won’t do you a bit of good when you are being followed in every store you go to in town because you ‘look’ like you might be trying to steal something and your kids are taunted at school…nor will it bring a loved one back who was found face down on the side of the road like a dog who was hit by a car and not worth the person stopping for...

It never ceases to amaze me how some people, who seem to hang so much of their identity on their percieved superior knowledge of what's best for everyone, can be so very ignorant to just what gave them the right to have their opinions.

I once thought that any reasonably intelligent human being could be taught...but I believe I'm getting a bit cynical as time goes on...and I really don't want to loose faith in humanity... :(

The funniest gun exchange on DU that I've read was a thread about whether you would take up arms in a SHTF scenario.

Tree hugger type: No! A gun never fed a single child!

DU gun guy: Unless you shot a cow with it.

:D

The DU is notorious for censorship when things don’t go the party line. In this case, the RKBA clearly won the argument and an idiot was exposed for what he is. They can’t have that on public record so the topic was closed and later, deleted. It’s really kinda comical to watch develop and come to a head but would be nice to see them be “stand up “ people and let the record stand.

With all due respect, I think you missed the point.

It is about 'men like him', not 'guns like this'.

We grew up dirt poor. My Dad's guns kept meat on our table many times. I'm not so poor nowdays, but my guns frequently put meat on the table.

Hey guys,

Remember, this is THE HIGH ROAD. Let's keep away from personal attacks on others or other internet forums. Calling someone with a different viewpoint an immature child isn't indicitive of taking the High Road.

One of the reasons I love this place so much is the way we can have an intelligent conversation about something without making it personal (well, most of the time). No matter how many varied viewpoints we have here, we keep it civil. Please keep it that way.

Frank

The rifle is an FN49 in 8mm Mauser, probably uncommon in the South in the 1950s...but not impossible. The scope was less likely. That said, the intended audience won't know the difference and just see a "hunting" rifle.
