I tiny part fell off of my 1959 Romanian SKS when I cleaned it this morning. It is a little 6mm, nipple shaped disk, maybe brass. It seemed to have fallen from the aread of the gas block/sight assembly but I cannot be sure. I have cleaned it before an not seen it. I cannot for the life of me see where it came from. It happened when I moved the gas block lever upwards. Here's a picture.

Please help me if you can. Thanks. QB

I just looked over my SKS and cannot see a part like that, nor do I know where it might be. Looks like a snap on a shirt, like a cowboy shirt, or a rivet off of a pair of jeans. Good luck!

It's the nut the stock reinforcement bolt screws into. It keeps the stock from slitting under recoil.

Did it just unscrew or did the bolt break off and leave a chunk in the center?

Either way I wouldn't shoot the rifle until it was repaired/replaced. BSW

I don't think that's it. This does have the same general shape but this little guy is much smaller. Plus that nut is still solidly in place and the back side of this is flat with no threads.

It looks very similar but is scaled down by half or more. This thing is tiny.

If it was a nut those two holes would be for tightening it with a spanner wrench, but no threads on the opposite side? As small as it is I'll go along with the suggestion it came off your shirt or jeans, I can't see it being a part of your SKS. Could it be a part from your sight assembly?

About 6 MM?
It looks like the bottom of the primer pocket broke out of a steel case, Berdan primed 7.62x39 round and fell in there somewhere.

But thats just guessing!

That is kind of what I was beginning to think...some flotsam and jetsam picked up from a range table or something.

I was just starting to disassemble the thing when this little piece just went "plop". I was like "holy crap...I have never seen that before". I take my guns apart and fiddle with them more often than I shoot them (sadly) and I had never seen this thing before today.

I am not going to worry about it anymore. Thanks everybody for your help. This SKS is my newest gun and I just haven't made myself as familiar with every little part of it yet.

AR-15...my ultimate dream gun...is next. I got this SKS in trade for a real nice Browning side-by-side that was too pretty for me...deep gloss and all that. I found it a home with a guy who has it up on a library gun rack with his nice over under. And I got a basic beater truck gun that is, bottom line, pretty nice.

I must admit I have never seen the bottom of a primer pocket break out of a fired case in almost 50 years of shooting & reloading.

But that is almost certainly what it has to be.

It has the profile of the bottom of a Berdan primer pocket, but 6mm (about 1/4") is way too big for that. What does the other side look like? Is it smooth, or is the projection we're seeing punched from a piece of flat metal?

Best guess so far, IMO, is part of a button or gripper snap.

I bet when the head was yanked off of that stuck case.....

or, it could be a piece suborbital space junk...there's been UFO's spotted in your neck of the woods you know!

Seriously, I fail to find it on any of the schematics I looked at, but then again, I didn't look at ALL of them.

Wow!

I will trade you my SKS for some nasty side by side Browning that is all glossy and shiny like that next time....

Kidding, I am sure there was more to the trade than what was posted, but I just had to say it. I love my SKS.

No that was the trade. All numbers matching Romanian SKS with the metal in near pristene condition for a field grade Browning SxS 12 ga with a single, non-selectable triggers.

It was a good deal for both. Dollar-wise, I would say the balance tipped toward the Browning sure. Desire-wise and function-wise, each of us got exactly what we were looking for. Plus the guy is an old friend and we trade stuff all the time. We're part of a network of good friends and knives, guns, leather products, ammo, and all kinds of stuff flows between us all the time. I have a great shotgun but lacked a semi-auto...now I have one of each.

Hoosier. The part that fell off your rifle is called the "Flux Capacitor". It is not an important part unless you are planning to travel to the future. You can most likely have it reinstalled by any local Mad Scientist for a very small fee.

I hope this takes a load of worry off your mind.:D:D:D

Maybe a spring retainer of some kind? What does part number 30 on this diagram look like?
SKS_762X39.jpg

Nope. Part number 30 is a ring affair with a hole in the middle. Plus, that is in place. Were that missing, it would be obvious as the recoil spring would not be partially compressed.

I do appreciate everyone's response.
