start edit: IF YOU DO NOT SHOP AT WALMART, OR DON'T LIKE WALMART, THEN DON'T BOTHER READING OR REPLYING TO THIS POST, IT DOESN'T REALLY CONCERN YOU. THIS POST IS SIMPLY TO INFORM THOSE THAT DO THE WALMART THING ON OCCASION OF SOMETHING THEY MAY APPRECIATE KNOWING. IF YOU HAVE NOTHING POSITIVE TO ADD TO THIS THREAD< THEN PLEASE...DON'T BOTHER.

THIS POST IS ABOUT BUYING RIFLES AT WALMART, IF AND ONLY IF YOU SO CHOOSE TO DO SO. :end edit.

I have seen several posts about Wal-Mart guns as of late. Just wanted to let you know, that if you ask a customer service representative in the sporting goods, they have a special order catalog you can browse through as well. Or you can go through the Wally webby and check all the special order stuff out as well. The trick here, is to have them call their distributor before you order to make sure they have them in stock. Otherwise, you just never know when they will come in. If they have them in stock, they usually get them to your store with 5-10days. Just thought I would drop everyone a little heads up in case you didn't already know.

The web site does not list everything. That book is a pretty good deal. You can also ask to see what they have in stock. They should show this to you. When you see that they have a lot of one particular item just ask if they will cut you a deal or do they have any closeouts. They usually don't advertise these.

That is a neat "Wish Book." :D

You're right. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean they don't have it either. When I was looking for my "Wally-World Special" I told the clerk what I was looking for and asked about ordering one. He told me they had one in the back, and came back in a few minutes with one in the box.

its different around here. i was talking to the sporting goods person 1 day, and commented on the fact of why they dont have guns in stock anymore. i wa told that only the top 1000 walmarts in regards to gun sells would continue to sell them and the rest where basically forced to drop the guns from their store.

Make sure hey have in at the distributor. When .17HMRs first came out they were hard to get. I ordered one through Wal-Mart and they initially said 2 weeks. Still wasnt in 6weeks later so i cancelled and found one at a local shop cheap. At the time even my local shops didnt have any.

Another little Wal-Mart tip... Don't go there.
Buy your guns from your local friendly neighborhood dealer and not a big out of town conglomerate putting others out of business.

While I concur with George-- I have bought guns at Wally world. One note is also that Wal Marts as of recently no longer take returns on guns. Make sure and look over anything bought there before leaving the store unless you have a few spare weeks to send it in.

Walmart Tip

While I respect your opinion and understand your point, I can't agree with you. Do you ALWAYS purchase everything you use fron the highest priced seller? I can't beleive you purchase your vehicles, appliances or many other larger ticket items at list price. As most of us do not have unlimited discresionary funds. Many of us have to attempt to get the best value for our available funds. That being the case, we purchase items from stores like Walmart so we can purchase other specialty items from specialty retailers such as gun shops that may or may not have ranges and require we purchase ammo from them also. See, everyboby gets a piece of the pie and we consumers actually support the shooting business and have fun too! Perhaps some retailers, if not so greedy, could grab more of the pie.

George, I live 40 miles from town. The only "dealers" we have in that college town are pawn shops for the most part. We have a machine shop/gunsmith guy that can order stuff, and fly fishing store that can do the same. I have bought guns from both of them. On several occasions we have gone in there to ask about a gun, and they themselves have directed us to Wal-Mart for a better price, and most likely in stock. Other than that, I have to drive over 100 miles in any direction to find a real gun dealer...other than Wally World. With the price of gas these days, that just don't happen very often I can assure you.

I have no problems buying guns from the little guys, in fact I enjoy it usually. But when they aren't here, or they don't have what I want, or they are just way out of the normal price range on something, then I just go to Dick's, or Cabella's, or Wal-Mart, or the likes...and usually save enough on the gun to buy ammo, and few other items for the package.

I mean shoot, I love to hand pick and buy my meat and produce fresh from the local butcher/market when they are available, but that doesn't mean I can always afford to do so.

Wal-Mart and Sam's Club

Wal-Mart and Sam's Club provide alot of jobs in the USA. How about the Amercian business base, provide the goods the Amercian public wants. I shop at Wal-Mart alot. I look for Amercian made first, can't always find what I need and want.

Until my local shops stop trying to rip me off, and treat me like a human being I will continue to buy all of quick fix gun stuff there(rather than taking time buying over the internet).;)

BULL!!! The little shops put themseves out of buisiness buy screwing people over. It finally caught up to them.

Local Shops

I have tried to buy at several local shops. Most of them have their "old boys club" group of customers and if you do not belong, they will not even give you the time of day. Plus their prices are way out of line.

When i go to spend my money, I will always try and get the best deal with the best service. Sometimes smaller is not always better.

Not a problem where I'm from since the Walmart's here do not sell guns. They still sell WWB, which I still use for the range. And quite frankly, the guy behind the counter is a genuinely nice fellow, with knowldge of the shooting sports to boot. The guys at my local gun shop (where I got my last gun) need some personality lessons. Sorry, but I'm getting my range ammo from Walmart.

I have no problems with local guys here, very friendly and willing to answer answer a 17-year-olds questions without some form of bias getting in the way.

Wally World and Fred-Meyer, usually the guy behind the counter is pretty up to code on store policy and wont even let me hold a Ka-Bar without I.D. showing I'm over 18...

The only "dealers" we have in that college town are pawn shops for the most part.

I was raised in Wheatland. We had a Coast to Coast hardware store. It was that or drive 75 miles to Cheyenne, 110 to Casper or 80 to Scottsbluff, NE. Not a lot of choice. Where I live now there are three privately owned gunshops within 25 miles, two Wal Mart Super Stores (one is less than a mile from where I am right now) and more pawn shops than I care to count.

I'm fortunate that I have a great small gun shop in my town. The nearest Wal-Mart is 60 miles away & the nearest Sportsman's Warehouse is 100 miles away and the nearest Scheels is 220 miles away. I do price guns when I'm at the bigger stores go back and check the price at the local guy's shop. He has always been cheaper, If he doesn't have what I want in stock, he can get it.

Last purchase was a SP101 for $415, same gun at the Sportsman's Warehouse was $439.95. While I do occasionally look at guns at Wal-Mart their selection is sparse at best and I've never bought one there.

I was in my local shop today. A 91/30 was $200 and an SKS 275. Both are way more than what i'm seeing on the site and in mail order. It's a beautiful enormous store with at least six people working there. Besides guns they have fishing, archery, clothes, dog supplies, and safes. Lots of it is reasonable and some is not. I'd say guns are top dollar list and I doubt there is any haggling with them. I don't see how they pay the overhead, really. And they don't mail order.

I recently bought a Ruger 10/22 for my son. Wal Mart was $10 higher than the local gun store so I purchased it locally.

I have no issues with purchasing from either store. We have a free market in the US and have the freedom to purchase from anyone.

It's a beautiful thing! :D

I say SUPPORT your local dealers... SCREW Wally even thought its hard to beat 9.89/50 .40S&W

Yes Wally provides "MANY" jobs in America, more like the LARGEST employed company in America. They provide US with LOW cost by having cheap wages, forcing other company's to out source good jobs to China where we American are stuck with cheap jobs like Walmart; and poor health benefits to the employees where Medicare is EVEN better. I Know America is better than this, Keep it home and make it "Made in the U.S.A." quality.

My parents fled from Vietnam coming here to make a better life - living the American dream, but by supporting a corporate entity like Walmart makes it less of a American dream for the mom and pop shop but a dream for the 3rd worlders.

Sorry, not buying that going to Walmart for guns/ammo is starving out my local dealers.

There are two dedicated "sportman's shops" and one dedicated gunstore in my town. The two sportsman's shops charge quite inflated prices, although I do a bit of business with both of them when the price is right or I need something within the next couple of weeks. The dedicated gunstore has good prices, but the owner is never in and the shop is never open. If I order something from him, it takes forever to get it from him. His supplier for most of his accessories and parts is very, very slow, and combine that with his never being open, makes it hard to get what I need from him. I have bought 2 guns from him, though.

That leaves a couple of pawnshops with really inflated prices ($300 for a beat up Henry lever action??!!) or Walmart (where the Henry lever action is new for $219). I'll take Walmart. They don't try to bull**** me like the sportsman's shops do, and they have a dependable supply line. I don't do internet orders (no credit card)\

They provide US with LOW cost by having cheap wages, forcing other company's to out source good jobs to China where we American are stuck with cheap jobs like Walmart; and poor health benefits to the employees where Medicare is EVEN better.

Companies should not be obligated to provide their workers with anything but wages that they deem fair in exchange for the services of the worker. If the worker does not agree with the wage level, then it is up to them to negotiate it higher or look for work elsewhere. Everything else, from minimum wage to mandatory leave or health benefits is against the spirit of capitalism.
