Hello everyone -

I inherited a beautiful S&W m19 from my father. The gun has been shot very little, but there is rust in the serrated back strap and on the bottom of the trigger guard.

I would like to refinish this gun in black, but something more rust resistant than the original bluing.

I have never heard of anyone Rogarding or polymer coating a revolver. Would it hold up? What would you recommend?

I know it would be easier and probably cheaper to hard chrome the gun, but it just wouldn't be "Dad's gun".

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

SW:)

Walt Birdsong - Black-T finish. Teflon based finish that is fine enough to go on springs and tough enough not to burn off .50cal muzzle brakes... Used to cost about $140.00 for a pistol. Last time I talked with him he was runing 7 days a week doing 40,000 magazines for the fibbies.

Some of the heat cured finishes can be done at home using an oven (if your wife is fairly understanding.) Brownells has a decent selection of these with various ingredients and colors, but you can also check out the automotive specialty catalogs and stores for muffler and other durable, heat resistant paints. Probably a good idea to test the auto products to see if your favorite solvent is going to eat them.

Be careful about anything requiring serious heat to cure. Excessive heat can be bad for springs, etc.

I had a gun worked on by a smith who did it in a black bake on teflon finish. I didn't ask for it and wasn't too happy about it, but it has been pretty durable and I have grown to like it and now I think it's pretty cool.

You can do it yourself if you are brave, but buy a toaster oven seperate to do it as I hear it stinks up the ovens pretty bad and sometimes perminently.
