so I was going to try and buff the finish on my glock to give more of a mirror look by using mothers polish and a rag. I rubbed on a spot for a minute and the black came off. so I panic like anyone would and figure since I have a big silver spot on my gun I might as well do the whole thing and get it refinished so I removed all the black off the gun and it looks awesome, I did a little research on the glock finishes and it says it has some kind of acid bath then a Tennifer finish which is very corrosion-resistant and Im hoping it impregnated the steal a little bit so it doesnt rust otherwise its going to get a nice duracoat flat olive green finish. I saw some that have heavy wear on them that the black has come off and they havent rusted. does anyone think it will rust? here is a picture of it.

Understand that the slide is stainless steel, but it may rust eventually. Understand, the Glocks you see with the two-tone finish, they didn't just take off the finish, they treated the slide with a new one of some flavor or other. Tennifer is about the most durable finish on the planet, but if you rub it off, it's gone.

yea being that its stainless makes me feel much better. as long as I treat it like I do all my other stainless firearms it should be fine right?

You didn't rub off the tennifer, it's in the surface of the steel, not on it. The outer black coating is a teflon type finish.

Unless you grind/sand through the surface of the slide, it will not rust.

It's not stainless either.

That is correct. The black finish that you see on a Glock is merely cosmetic, a blackening finish.

BTW, Glock can refinish your slide for something like $45 plus shipping. I had a G36 done a few years back in Smyrna. I was told that the new finish would be more flat black like a Parkerized one, but when I picked up the gun the tech told me that they had a new finish. It is much more like a standard factory finish, if not a bit nicer.

ok so I can leave it like it is and just keep it clean and well oiled and it should be fine? I realy like it this way. Its different. Ive had this thing for a while and the change in appearance looks great to me. less like a cookie cutter all black glocks I see every day.

awesome, they have some under "modified glocks" that are exactly like mine and called pollished glocks. thanks for the link man. youve stopped my worrying completely.

Helz... what kind of "polish" was it that took that off? I have to admit, it's kinda cool. Though I bet I would have soiled myself if I tried that unknowingly.

yea I think I P'd a little when i saw the black was GONE. mothers mag polish. I use it in my tumbler to make my brass shine. but my buddy polished the sides of his blued kimber 1911 and made it almost a mirror like my stainless colt 1991 that the sides of the slide ARE like a mirror and came factory that way. his did not, but he did a nice job on it. im sure he will post a picture on here as soon as he see this thread, WON'T YOU FLYINBRYAN???..but I didnt know Glocks where not blued. I should have researched the finish of a Glock before hand but then I wouldnt have this fine custom polished slide glock 22. HA!

here are better pictures. I need a better cam. this ones gettin old. doesnt take good close ups and thats what I need it most for.

ya, i forgot to mention that part.

those are bulgarian death flowers, grown in the prime-evil jungles of bulgaria by the inmates of the bulgarian institute for the criminally insane.

makes me shiver inside everytime i see one of those pink flowery little sprinkles type flower watering jugs in the gardening section at wal mart

Slide is not stainless. I would not have done it to mine, but if you like it that is what matters. Most of the 2 tone Glocks I have seen have had the slide satin nickle plated or some other coating. I do not know if it will rust now or not, but if it does you can get it refinished with the finish of your choice.

Looks horrible. In fact I bet it will rust away to nothing in 2 months. Send it to me, I will dispose of it. :)

On a serious note, polish the barrel too, it will come out shiney as heck, and look nice with the slide that way.

Its not going to rust. I left something out for those who are going to try this. After starting with the rag and making a silver spot on the gun that took a good amount of rubbing just for that spot and going into panic mode after seeing the black was gone, I picked up some scotch brite and that got it off alot quicker but was still slow so i picked up some abrasive buff dremel tips, 512E to be exact, that had a scotch brite type buffer on them and that made it really quick and easier to get the finish off more uniformly. I took it to the gunsmith today to get his opinion on what I did and he said Im a luck f&%k and used the right dremel tips which is what he says he used to polish Glock slides, said he had done 4 of them like that, even ported one, I just got lucky when I chose scotch brite and those tips. He also told me if I dont like it or that if I had done it wrong like buffing all the way through the tennifer finish which would be really hard from what he told me, or using sand paper which I thought about doing, Glock will refinish it for about $50. so there ya go. if you screw it up trying, its only a $50 to $70 mistake and you get a brand new flat mat factory finish on your slide. good luck if you are going to do it on yours and post pics for sure. :D

Even mild steel stays nice looking for years as long as it's kept protected by even a super light but even coating of oil.

I like the new look. And this is coming from a VERY non Glock guy. I'm sure the others are right about the durability of it but I'd do the usual wipe down with a lightly oily rage to protect it anyhow. And it hardly takes anything at all as long as it's completely covered. No need to make it dripping or even near to dripping. Just enough to alter the colour and that's all the film of oil you require for peace of mind.

Keep in mind that finger oil is quite harmful. A last wipe with the lightly oily rage you keep in a plastic bag for this purpose before putting it away in the case and then don't touch the steel slide until next time would be a small guarantee that nothing will happen.

A lot of people do this all the time. The tennifer coating is quite robust. They wont rust. Not unless you leave it in a puddle of salt water or something. Or carry it in your sweaty armpit and dont clean it.

im kinda the same way.

in fact, im pretty sure that is the reason i like it.

it just really looks more like a real metal and bullets pistol now instead of a glock.

(no offence glock guys)

funny side note now that i think about it, i was talking to helz on the phone today and he told me he was carrying the glock today.

before i could really think about what i was saying, i blurted out, ,,,,somewhat distressed,,,,

"your not gonna stop carrying that colt commander now are you?"

humor aside, ive seen that friggin glock shoot 1" 5 shot groups at 50ft with enough consistency to beat the kimber i posted in post #13.

but im quite a bit older and need glasses.
