I'm moving to SLC in the near future and am thinking about getting out of the automotive industry and trying something new. I've been selling/financing cars for the last 12 years and have done well but it's not where my passion is. I LOVE GUNS-all different KINDS of GUNS! I am PASSIONATE about plinking, target shooting, handling and learning about GUNS! Is there a way to utilize my background in sales and finance within the firearms industry (when I'm a newbie to this with very limited knowledge of the firearms industry)? If anyone has any insight I'd appreciate some sage advice!

The firearms industry (manufacturers and distributors) generally sell directly to licensed dealers, so much of the sales work comes in the advertising area.

Retail dealers, like their automotive counterparts, sell product to the public; but it's a hard business with a lot of discounting and slim profit margins. I once worked for a very wise retailer who said, "Too many shops are run like a hobby rather then a business." Keep this in mind. You may love guns and shooting sports, but making money at it is something else. Most retailers that make money do so by selling services (gunsmithing, etc.) ammunition, and accessories.
