A signature discussion...

I use my signature to highlight the absurdity and the low intelligence of the anti-gun politicians.
.

Why is it that some people feel the need to list all of their owned firearms in their signature? Why would anyone want to call attention to something like that? Personally, I don't even mention my ownership of anything resembling a weapon to anyone that's not already aware of my hobby. I just don't get it.

Yet you post here.

I do display an NRA Life Member sticker on the back window of my personal vehicle

Gun thieves know you have guns. Mentioning or listing the guns you have.......makes no difference. 99.9% of area thieves don't care what gun models you own.

Yeah I'm guilty of the NRA sticker too. But I don't bother mentioning all my guns even in discussions, much less in signatures.

More annoying is in car forums when people list all of their cars that they own, have sold, or even those that belong to extended family. Ugggggg. Imagine doing that with firearms! It might look like this:

==
Regards, Gun Nut
Kimber 1911 (sold)
Hi-Point 380 (CCW)
Smith & Wesson 642 (Hers)
Savage 22 Rifle
Henry Lever Action (Deer hunting)
Llama 1911 (Dad's, sold)
Glock 26 (Traded)
Sig P220 (I wish I had one)
HK P7M8 (I wish I had one of these too!)
Colt LE6920 AR-15 (truck gun)
Mosin Nagant M44 (precision sniper rifle)
Other gun
Other gun
Opinion on a gun
other gun
---

etc. that would take up half a page. That would get a person on the ignore list right quick.

Not really interested in posting a list of all my guns in my sig line; I would rather take a nice photo of them and post it at when I feel it adds something to the conversation. Have only had two sig lines so far, have a couple more in mind for use at some future date.

Pride, of course.

I don't do it (in a sig or post) because I almost never post specific personal info online. It's the same reason I'm not on facebook, twitter, etc... After all, what's the point of being against government surveillance or a national firearm database if you're just going to volunteer that same info on platform the whole world has access to?

I like all the different types of signature line because they provide varying degrees of insight about the members making them and the diversity of THR membership.

I do not like signature lines that are political insults. They do not weaken the member's opponents or strengthen their allies, but they can alienate those who are neutral to the point of becoming an opponent.

My signature line serves two purposes. Primarily it is my hope it sets an example of monetarily contributing to organizations defending the RKBA that members and guests who do not will decide to emulate. Secondarily it is to inform Conservatives that people who are not Conservatives also put their money where there mouth is to support the defense of Second Amendment Rights.

I think some use the signature option to brag. Others try to make themselves look like someone they are not. Then again I do not always believe all signatures to be 100 % truthful. Kudos to those that are honest with the message they send in the signature.

Before I had

an auction, I was the proud owner of 72 rifles (69 center fire and three muzzle-loaders), two shotguns and 23 pistols and revolvers. Way too much information involved.

I like my signature, because I am proud of my service.
As for listing guns, not for me on a signature, but I would be more than happy to post a comment or picture about a gun I own, if it adds to the discussion.

You get at least two kinds of sig lines - property, which brags about what someone owns, and credentials, which brags about what someone has accomplished in the way of life goals.

It's still bragging about who you are. Some say it's "pride," which could be an interesting discussion of what constitutes propping up one's self esteem and what isn't.

We see it in daily life all the time, bumperstickers were already mentioned. Then there's wearing clothing with obvious Branding.

Which means that some people don't have any concern at all with broadcasting what they own, or who they are, and sometimes do it as their first line of defense. Putting up the front, so to speak.

Others attempt to reduce their signature and play the grey man. It's hard to play whack a mole when the mole never sticks up out of his hole.

The difficulty comes from those who depend on all the cred and certs up front, especially when they read something different from their understanding. They see it as something to immediately challenge, or accept without any reservations.

Just because some don't have fancy icons and lengthy sig lines doesn't mean they don't know squat. And just because they do doesn't mean much either. Any credit card can buy a high profile tactical sig line. And, that old duffer in a shawl collar sweater might be packing more heat than you think. Malls are like that. So are forums.

Which is why sig lines mean nothing other than to embellish someone on-line for their own satisfaction. Not everyone plays that game.

I always assumed folks who list the guns they own in their signature lines were using it as a way to let others on the forum know what guns they have direct, first hand experience with, and thus, if you have a question about any of those particular guns, you could pm them. It sort of seems like a statement of your knowledge base, though owning a particular gun doesn't necessarily indicate a sound knowledge or understanding of that firearm.

Of course, some people are materialistic too, and just want to boast about their collection.

Cynical much? It has been my experience that all encompassing judgements such as above are rarely accurate in explaining a particular human behavior. As Freud supposedly said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".

Not at all sure what my sig line means about me. But if you guys analyze it I'm sure it will be a life changing discovery.

OilyPablo lie down on the couch and I will explain. You obviously have no more patience making lengthy explanations to people who continue to question that gun ownership is a Constitutional right, despite the Supreme Court confirming it is, so you are giving a time saving blunt statement to signal the end of debate. You may be similarly blunt in reply to the questioning of any other convictions you may have. How’s that for a crack at analysis, even it did not result in a life changing discovery, and only further confirmation I am not to be relied upon for accurate psychoanalysis. :D

Pride, arrogance, or just letting folks know what you like, and find interesting. Probably a lot of us will have a little of all these ingredients in the formula for their sig line. Mine just shows the slightly twisted sense of humor I, usually have.

I, like posting photo's of my collection, and shooting sessions on F.B. for my own memories, and for my family, and friend's who find it interesting, but aren't that involved, if at all. And I, enjoy seeing their motorcycle, and guitar photo's.

Looking for "ghost guns" which shoot "heat seeking bullets that cook animals" with "more thrusts per squeeze" using "magazines that can only be used once" featuring "the shoulder thing that goes up" and "assault weapons that can be bought at a store without a NICS check".

Don't forget the machine guns bought through mail order and across state lines that are used in mass shootings.

Sigs are informative and can indicate qualifications to comment on certain topics. I.e. "Hand Loading since '69". What irritates me is people who preface derogatory remarks about others with comments like 'I don't mean anything by this" or 'not to offend anyone' - in an effort to make their assertions appear acceptable.

No insult intended of course.

I use my sig line to identify a thought or talking point regarding our 2nd amendment, or to make a statement regarding the errosion of our rights.

I change it from time to time to a fresh thought. (like I did recently)

I have't found anyones signiture line to be offensive , in fact this is the first time something has been brought up regarding a negative issue with them. I pretty much enjoy reading others sig lines as it tells me a little about them as a person.

As far as sharing the fact that you own a firearm, let me just say that it is my belief the government knows 98% of those that have a firearm . They have many ways of tracking gun owners. If they come for you they may not know every gun you have, but the one you buried better be deep , someplace, else, and not on the books of anybody.

No internet at home, I use tapatalk on my cell to surf THR... I don't see the signatures. To be honest, I dont even know what mine says, although I'm sure its a quote or two from here, and I don't even know if it shows up when I post from tapatalk.

I hate the "list" style sigs that someone mentioned, and the huge sigs like 1KPerDay(?) mentioned. One forum had an unwritten rule that said if your sig is longer than your reply, dont post your sig. In have been wishing for vB to make that an option since.

While I am in the dark when someone says something about another member's sig, I can't say I miss seeing them.

On the car boards I used to frequent, I would get the occasional tech question PM based on something in my sig, so I can see the utility of listing everything. Also, based on some of them, folks like to brag about what they have...

Note: you can use the web view option on the additional options menu (the ... menu) while viewing a thread in Tapatalk. Just in case you "wanted" to see somebody's signature that was referenced in a post.

Thank you for the tip, however I am aware of that. I have found it to be more of a nuisance than a convenience.

The font is too small, so I have to zoom in to see it, then (carefully) swipe the screen left to right to read it, which is problematic since I tend to read a line at a time rather than words and phrases.

I just hit the back button and avoid it.

Not sure I've ever cared about sig lines that speak to material items that one owns ...

Ideas and principles, thoughts and ideals, just plain great (or funny) quotes are of far more interest to me.

I know a lot of stupid people who have the money to buy a lot of stuff, anyway, so what others own just doesn't seem relevant (unless they want to let me shoot their guns, of course).

I really don't care one way or another, although it is a little annoying when you have to scroll a bunch of it , but I have no problem with a guy listing a few things, especially if he served our country.
I will post a picture, or mention stuff I got when its relevant to the conversation though.

As a side note, Jim Watson posted:
"In the same vein, when I first internetted at an advanced age, I didn't know I was supposed to come up with a cute CB type handle and just posted stuff under my real name. Think of all the fun I have missed out on."

I always thought that was funny, how guys would have handles, and then call each other buy their name in their posts
