I was reading about the new California law (AB962) that states that at the end of January 2011, Californians will no longer be able to buy, and have shipped, ammo from other states. It also states that you will be required to provide a thumb print when buying ammo that will be held in a state database. How are you Californians dealing with this new law?

We appear to be caught in the confluence of the traditional left wing ban mentality and certain law enforcement interests. Don't see how this bill will save one life or prevent gangs / other criminals from getting ammo. I don't see much political chance this will change and we're going to suffer for it. Perhaps time to start plotting my escape to Oregon.

Some people have already stopped shipping handgun ammo. There is an effort to repeal this bill sponsored by someone, but I'm not holding my breath.

In a capitalist society, laws like this are insane. I am dealing with it by reloading and collecting brass.

As if that was why this bill was written. I'm guessing that the intent of this bill is to keep ammo out of the hands of Californians.

How will Californians deal with this?

They'll give their thumbprints, and tell you that the weather is nice, that there are no other pretty places in the US, and that there is no wine production outside California. They'll look for little ways to sneak around the laws.

My hat's off to CalGuns and company. But they're fighting an up-cliff battle.

I think the Governor signed it in compromise for something else, maybe budget related. Whoever authored it I believe was just looking to notch another mark in his anti-gun belt. Even on the surface, this law does absolutely nothing.

I am always surprised at new laws - making something illegal doesn't solve anything or remove the problem (if it's considered a problem) - it simply makes it illegal. Stupid people have the mentality that once something is criminalized, the problem just magically goes away.

If I were a gun store, ironically, I'd be in favor of it (for strictly business reasons). It eliminates the only other choice for shooters.

The law doesn't restrict rifle ammo and doesn't restrict components. I reload for rifle calibers, I guess I'll start pistol reloading, too. My fear is suppliers will stop selling any ammunition products, legal or not, to California.

I wonder if toward the end of the year we'll see another run on ammo, fueling hoarding all over again - just when it started to ease. After all, there are 37 million people here.

No they don't. Stupid Bay-Area hippie throwbacks have the mentality that guns are evil, and that we need to ban them to make the whole world all flowers and butterflies. They know they have to ban them one bit at a time, so that's what they're doing.

Don't be so deluded as to think that the fascists who want to control you really think they're going to reduce crime. They are accomplishing exactly what they want to.

Even Jello Biafra, a moonbat in his own right, saw this decades ago and wrote a song... And now Jerry Brown is running AGAIN?!?

I am Governor Jerry Brown
My aura smiles
And never frowns
Soon I will be president...

Carter Power will soon go away
I will be Fuhrer one day
I will command all of you
Your kids will meditate in school
Your kids will meditate in school!

[Chorus:]
California Uber Alles
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Uber Alles California

Zen fascists will control you
100% natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face

Close your eyes, can't happen here
Big Bro' on white horse is near
The hippies won't come back you say
Mellow out or you will pay
Mellow out or you will pay!

That's my whole point, just because something becomes illegal doesn't make it go away. "illegal" drugs have been and will continue to be easily available and plentiful. How long have we been waging that unsuccessful war?

Ain't that the truth.

I have an older friend who was, and still considers himself a hippie. However, he fortunately is smart enough to realize that things are not and never will be fluffy bunny like they dreamed of in the 60's. He and his hippie wife both pack heat and are both looking into getting their CCW's. :D

The War on (Some) Drugs isn't about stopping drug use. It's about keeping a lot of people in the Federal Government employed.

You're probably right. I've always thought of it as a tool for the cops to clean up the streets with too. I think there are a lot of laws like that - used as tools when no serious crimes are evident.

I just wish people would wake up to the realization that making something illegal usually does not solve any problems - it just makes criminals.

The thing you have to understand about AB962 is that although on paper it is supposed to only affected "pistol ammunition," this is California we are talking about here. To the attorney general, anything that has once been fired through a pistol is considered a "pistol ammunition" and thus liable to be governed by the new law.

Personally, I stocked up on .40 rounds for my soon-to-be USP .40. I hope .223 and 12-gauge remain legal to buy over the counter after the law goes into effect. If not, I guess I'll have to deal with it.

I'm actually looking to leave the state for graduate school.

I'm in central CA and much of my hunting is in a lead ban area. A few years ago I parked my 22lr rifles in favor of a 17 Mach 2, but then came the lead ban and I switched to the 22 mag for which CCI made lead free cartridges. Now I see Hornady has come out with lead free 17m2. We have gun stores here but they don't usually stock out of the ordinary rounds and I fear, mail order may be my only relief.

I hope the 17m2's are not considered handgun ammo, as the internet or mail order may be my only hope.

I like how AB962 states a few times "by creating new crimes"!!!!! SO this bill is designed to create new crimes!!!!

By creating a new crime, this bill would impose a state-mandated
local program.

The bill will prohibit gang members from buying ammo, how hilarious is that?

So a store owner is supposed to not sell ammo to whom he thinks is a gang banger? Sounds like discrimination to me!!!

When do these retard socialists going to get it through their thick skulls that new laws don't stop crime? Why don't they enforce the laws they already have?

When... get it through their thick skulls that new laws don't stop crime?
You had it right the first time. I'm being serious.
YOU need to get it through your head that they aren't passing these laws to affect crime. Seriously.
I don't even think they are couching it that way. They simply desire more power and control, period.
Don't be fooled into thinking that they have good intentions. They want to disarmed the populace.

You need to accept this.

I am delighted in this new law...

Freedom is only a few miles away in a place called Arizona. Buy all of the evil handgun ammunition you want. No thumbprint, no permits, no paperwork... Just bring $$$$$$!!

Wait!! I forgot. You are not supposed to buy anything in or from Arizona because your leftists don't like us. They have ordered a boycott of all things Arizonian...

So sorry... but then, perhaps if they feel generous you will be allowed to keep your b-b guns.

On the other hand you could sneak across our border. Some folks to your south will be glad to explain how... :uhoh:

There are a few of us left in California who applaud your common sense approach with your new immigration law and are embarrassed by our colleagues who want to boycott your fine state.

We know that and appreciate it. My remarks were made tongue-in-cheek. You and others that feel the same way are welcome to sneak over and buy all the ammunition you want. Apparently California’s left-wing elite never considered this possibility. But as my late mother often said, “some folks don’t have enough brains to keep their ears apart.” :D

I figured as much and I wasn't offended.

At the All American smallbore prone match July 1-4 someone was thinking about flying the Arizona flag. The range is in a public park and we will probably have the only American flag in the whole entire place.
