I went through my Cartridges Of The World and estimated that I have fired around fifty different cartridges. Even if I fired one round of one I counted it. One time at a range a guy I knew let me shoot his 300WSM once, so it counts as far as I am concerned.

I am surprised that there are some pretty common calibers that I have never shot. I have never fired one single round of 7mm Remington Magnum, a pretty popular one at that. On the other hand, I have fired a 8mm Remington Magnum, a cartridge that is nearly obsolete. The rarest round I have ever shot must be a 351WSL.

How many different cartridges do you estimate that you have fired? Weather you have fired one round or one hundred rounds, count them all? What is the rarest or most obsolete round you have ever shot?

Interesting!

I would say around 40 different ones for me.
Rarest would be a 4-way tie between .32 Remington in a Remington model 141 pump, a .351 Winchester in a semi-automatic Winchester model 07, .348 Winchester in a Winchester model 71, and a .218 Bee in a Browning model 65

Should be an interesting thread!

Number of different cartridges? I had to write them all down and made it to 33. I suspect I am missing one or two, but it's got to be close enough for .gov work!

Anyway, I think the rarest would be the 7.5 French MAS. But I've also fired a .480 Ruger, which isn't super popular either... :p

If your thread was titled "cartridge lifetime list" or something similar, you might have more responses. It is an interesting topic.

I was only able to come up with about 25. I need to get out to the range more! Still haven't lit up my old 8x56R Steyr, or a 50 BMG.

This begs another thread. What is on your cartridge bucket list? Mine is the 50 and maybe someday 37 or 40mm flare/grenade. I also have friends with 375 H&H and 348 Win I will have to annoy until they share.

I reload for 34 different ones at present. I remember IIRC about 71 that I have fired. I want to try that 577 T-Rex that is on utube. the oddest would be .32 rimfire or the 8MM Lebel or as I was told a 65 CAL muzzle loader as a 10 year old. I could put my thumb down the barrel of that thing and it seemed 6 feet long at the time.

I don't have any idea. That said; at one time I had dies for and reloaded 141 different cartridges. I've since culled the herd down to fewer than 50 sets of dies and sold off the accompanying rifles, revolvers and pistols as well as about 12 different TC Contender barrels.

.22 LR
.38 SPL
9x19mm
.40 S&W
.22-250
.223
5.56x45mm
.260 Rem
.30-30
7.62x39mm
.308
.30-06
.35 Rem
20 gauge
12 gauge

I believe that's my complete list. I'm relatively new to shooting as I only started 3 years ago and I'm a poor college student that doesn't get to shoot often.

Theres only one thing missing from that list that gets me upset, really. 45 ACP

Don't much care about the cartridge. I'm more interested in the firearm. For example, shooting an FAL isn't the same as shooting an M14. Same cartridge.

Cool survey!

So far I've shot about 28 different cartridges that I can remember. Looks like I've got some catching up to do! :D

1. .22 rimfire (I lumped L and LR together. Seems like I did shoot someone's Magnum, but don't remember.)
2. .243 Winchester
3. .25 ACP
4. 6.5x55 Swedish
5. .270 Winchester
6. 7.62x25
7. .30-30
8. .30-06
9. .32 ACP
10. .32 S&W Long
11. .32 Winchester Special
12. .348 Winchester
13. 9mm Para.
14. .380 ACP
15. .38 Special
16 .357 Magnum
17. .41 Long Colt
18 .40 S&W
19. 10mm Auto
20. .38-40 Winchester
21. .41 Action Express
22. .41 Magnum
23. .405 Winchester
24. .44-40 Winchester
25. .44 Special
26. .44 Magnum
27. .45 ACP
28. .45 Colt

Not to mention a bunch of .410, 12 & 20 gauge shotgun shells. So 31 if you count those. I may have shot someone's .444 Marlin about 40+ years ago, but I don't remember for sure so I omitted it.

I suppose the most obsolete ones I've shot are the .41 Long Colt, .41 Action Express, and .405 Winchester (The .405 was obsolete at the time and expensive! About $70 from Old Western Scrounger  )

Wow, 63 different cartridges. I honestly thought it would be more. However if we include the muzzleloaders below it jumps up to a total of 82.

In rifled muzzleloaders:
.32
.36 Cap & Ball revolver
.40
.44/45 Cap & Ball revolver
.50
.54
.58 roundball
.577 Minie
.60

In smoothbore muzzleloaders:
.41

.54
.58
.62
.66
.69
.72
.77
.83

Interesting exercise :D
I just went through my COTW and I came up with 108.
I'm sure I missed a few that aren't even in the book. (The S&W 320 Revolving Rifle comes to mind.)

HO-CHEE-MAMA!! You've done a ton of reloading in your life. If I ever get to Montana I'll make it a point to look you up.

.22 Short: 10/22
.22 LR: 10/22, High Standard, Marlin 60, Buckmark, etc.
.38 Special: Model 10, Model 37? Probably others as well.
.44 Special: Taurus 443, Charter revolver
.45 Colt: Bond derringer
.380: LCP, PPK
9x19mm: 92fs, P89, Star M43, XDm, probably more.
.40 S&W: G23, P226 I think?
.45 ACP: 1911, Baby Eagle, P345
.223 Rem: AR, Mini-14
.243 Win: Savage of some kind?
.308 Win: Weatherby VG1, and some tube-fed semi-auto Remington?
.30-06 Sprg: M1 Garand
.410: Bond Derringer
20 Ga: A pump shotgun I borrowed for dove hunting one time...
12 Ga: Winchester Defender

Only 16, it seems. I may have fired a .357 Mag at some point, but I don't remember. Definitely want to add .44 Mag, 10mm, and 7.62x39.

The largest cartridge i ever shot must be the .378 Weatherby Magnum. I was at a range many years ago and a fellow there was shooting one. This was at an outdoor range. There not many people there at that time, but everytime he touched a round off, everyone stared towards him, even though he positioned himself at the very end of the rifle side.

That thing was LOUD!!!!!

Anyway, I finally walked towards him to see what the heck he was shooting. He told me and showed me a round. He asked if I wanted to fire the thuing. Not wanting to seem like a "sissy", I agreed to it.

It is one of the few times that I was nervous about shooting a gun. He handed me a shell, it looked more like an artillery piece then a small arms cartridge. I looked at the rifle and I did see a muzzle break. Then I noticed a thick, well-cushioned recoil pad. That did ease me a bit. I took the round, dropped into the chamber, closed the bolt, and proceeded to shoot the thing.

I remember pulling that rifle very tightly against my shoulder. I also used every bit of eye relief that scope had. I pulled the trigger. It wasn't that bad except for the noise. I survived!

What is the biggest, standard cartridge you guys have ever shot?

For me it was the .405 Winchester. After reading about it in CoTW, I had trepidations about its "very punishing recoil." But once I shot it, I realized that there wasn't much of anything "punishing" about it at all. The recoil was there, sure, but it wasn't overly unpleasant to me. To be fair to CoTW, I believe that the author was referring to the curved buttplate that some of the earlier 1895 Winchesters had. Mine had the so-called shotgun stock with the flat buttplate.

I have also noticed recoil tends to be exaggerated. The first time I shot a .44 magnum revolver I was worried that it would shatter my wrist or I would get smacked in the face by the recoil. It wasn't that bad. In fact, I found it to be fun to shoot.
