I mean the .223 round, in my opinion, isn't exactly the toughest round, and I've seen it in action and its quite pitiful, its essentially an overpowered .22 just with a bit more weight.

You are doing the right think leaving the world of "pray and spray" and entering the world of being able to hit what you shoot at with the first round. I really like my Bushmaster and Colts are very good.
I don't necessarily think you have to choose. Can't you have and use both? It's still good to have a gun you can use to low-crawl through the sagebrush and not feel guilty about beating it up.
Good way of putting it. I'd add they are decent $500 rifles as well now that prices have come down. Still a lot less than even an entry level AR. A decent AK with an Ultimak rail and Aimpoint H1 would be a formidable combat firearm and cost ~$1100 set up like that vs. ~$1500 for an entry level AR and that sight. Add 1500 rds of ammo, spare mags and maybe some gear and you'd be at the same price as just the AR + sight. The AK is a good $400 rifle and a great $250 rifle,
+1 Spending some time over at M4carbine.net will be invaluable in your decision.Hey ccsniper, I also went to the ar15 platform after first buying a romanian AKM.
It's in your best interest to save some money on top of that $800 and get yourself a QUALITY ar15 rifle.
the guys at m4carbine.net can help you out tremendously.
You have no idea what you're talking about.
