I'm thinking either the 9mm or the .45acp.

At work we have a KAC Supressor for my HK Tactical

I wasn't near as impressed as I thought I'd be with what I was under the impression was the end all be all of cans.

Made me start thinking about a 9mm. Well that and watching the new Bond flick. So is the 9mm the way to go here? I didn't think you'd be able to get lower volume than the .45 being a subsonic round and a big heavy round.

So what's the verdict here? ANy insight? Right now I"m leaining toward just going with the KAC one. Don't need ears, and from a ways off you can't tell. But I was always wondering if something was pretty much silent.

I'm also a big fan of Smith handguns so maybe an extended barrel for my SW99 should I go the 9mm route. Maybe a new 9mm HK Tactical even. I want something i can shoot pests in my yard without anybody getting worried.

It seems that .45 is difficult to suppress for some reason despite being a big slow bullet that you can keep subsonic.
Your best bet is to go with a 9mm can as they seem to be more effective.
However, if you don't mind waiting, AAC recently came out with the Blackbox .45 which is claimed to be hearing safe.

Your other option for pests in the yard would be a .22 suppressor. They are very quiet and cheap to shoot.

Assuming you know your application arrived (delivery confirmation from USPS, check has cleared), I would wait until the 8 week mark. Chances are you'll have your stamp in hand by then. You can call the NFA Branch at 304-616-4500 if you want though.

They send the stamp to the dealer and the dealer will need to contact you.

You can call NFA branch and ask your transfer status. You will have to provide the serial number and name of transferror. They will tell you whether it's pending, approved, etc.

My trust transfers have run about 8 weeks lately.

To the OP, 9mm will be quieter than .45 from a dry can. Shooting wet makes .45 a very quiet option, but it's a little messy.

I guess I can bite my lip and wait a couple more weeks. I did get the return receipt back from where some one signed for my envelope at BATFE. Have not checked to see if check cleared- doesn't matter I guess as they cash it whether approved or not.

Going with 9mm you lose quite a bit to keep it sub-sonic. With a .45 you don't lose anything. Also make sure to keep those cans wet, it will really help to keep the sound down.

If all that you are after is quiet then take a look at the De Lisle carbine replicas that you can find. I have herd that the firing pin makes more noise than the rifle actually firing.

Not really. All factory 147gr 9mm ammo is subsonic, and it is plenty powerful. 147gr Federal HST is downright nasty.

I agree with Conqueror, the subsonics make a big difference when shooting suppressed. I shot this video last week to illustrate the differences, both are using Georgia Arms ammo. The first one is with 115gr FMC, the 2nd with 147gr FMC, 950 FPS. This is with an open bolt M11 which isn't known for it's quietness, any pistol you choose will be quieter still.

I sent in my short Certification of Trust. 2 months later, I hear from BATFE that they need the long Declaration of Trust. Sent it today. Now to wait- AGAIN. Hope this saves someone else some time and headaches.

If they contacted you needing more info, that means an examiner has already laid hands on your paperwork. Once they get your Declaration of Trust, I wouldn't be surprised if you got your stamp in hand within a week or two.

a .45 has almost twice the pressure wave, lots more burning powder, and a lot bigger barrel than a 9mm.

more high pressure, high temperature gasses transmit more energy into sound waves.

also the side and barrel on a .45 is much heavier and "beefier" than a 9mm. that means theres more metal slamming into more metal during firing too.

if you want "silent" go for a .22

what i was trying to say was the .45 produces a higher VOLUME of gasses than a 9, because a .45 case has a larger ammount of powder (in most cases)

SAAMI specs says a 9mil produces about 35000 psi of pressure

a .45 produces about 21000.
