This post concerns some 9mm ammunition I purchased at Wal-Mart today. I'm in the habit of shopping a Wally world, because of the occasional good deals on ammo, when it's available.

Today I picked up a couple of boxes of 9mm. The brand was "ZQI". The writing on the box said it was made in Turkey, but there was no other information on bullet weight or velocity or energy. It was a bit more expensive than I expected at $21 for a box of fifty, but I decided to buy 2 boxes anyway and take them to the range.

I noticed something was different when I began shooting these rounds. The recoil and muzzle blast was noticeably stronger and louder. The recoil felt more like I was shooting my 40 S&W, and the muzzle flash was much brighter.

The only information on the box is "9x19mm Parabellum Pistol Cartridge, FMJ Bullet, 50 Cartridges". After looking at the website, I realized why it kicked so much, it's basically a +P 9mm round, but it's not marked that way. On the official website, it mentions the mean chamber pressure of the round as "max 36,995 psi"

Here's the link to that page with that info

To sum it up, if you shoot this in your 9mm, be advised, it's +P ammo that's not marked as such.

I also notice they sell a 1200 round box if this stuff at Wally World. My wife usually doesn't say much to me about my ammo purchases, but if I bought a box like that, for the $500 list price, I might have some explaining to do.

And that 9mm NATO is going to be hotter than 9mm Luger we are used to. As you posted, pretty much a +P if you buy a box of 9x19 NATO.

I haven't shot any myself, and probably won't (at least not boxes worth) since it doesn't conform to SAAMI specs..

FWIW it's really surprising how much ammo both my local WMs have. Between the two of them they have a crapton of 5.56, and believe it or not they have a good stock of .357 Sig and .300 Blackout!

Everything but .22 lr, or course!:neener:

It's probably very good ammo. I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't better then some of the domestic junk like WWB or Champion. It was designed to be shot in Turkish service pistols
known here as the P-24. That is very substantial weapon made of forged components. If you shoot it in some inexpensive cheaply made American clunker guns they may fall apart.:uhoh:
Another reason to own fine classic American handgun known as the P89.

I passed on this stuff at Wallys; I don't want to pay more than $16 for 9mm FMJs until I have to. Other types of 9mm ammo that I got at my local Wallys worked out O.K.; I like that Tula Brass Maxx 9mm that comes in the 100 round cans, I still have 5 of those. The 9mm PPU ammo that I picked up is a little weak but it otherwise shoots O.K.

PPU is always weaker/watered down in multiple calibers. Wonder why that is. PPU in 7.62x25mm is over 200 fps slower in the same grain weight over a chrono then S&B, which seems to be on the hotter spectrum of European ammo.
