This may be old news, but I didn't find anything in a search, so here it is.

I stopped in at Academy yesterday with my family. I was looking for a youth life jacket for my 6 y/o son. We picked one out then headed to the gun counter.

This is where it gets interesting. I wanted to see what brands of AR's they stocked and check prices. I will be buying an AR within a week and Academy is the only gun counter in the area I had not looked at yet so I asked the older gentleman at the counter to see the Bushmaster with the A3 stock. It was like pulling teeth to get him to show it to me:scrutiny:

A little about my 6 y/o. This past year in kindergarten his teachers suggested testing him for the gifted and talented program, we knew he was a bright kid but had no idea his I.Q. test would top 200. He has a 3rd grade reading level and will be skipping the 1st grade. He has also been shooting a youth stock bolt action .22 for 2 years now and is getting bored with it.

He may be smart, but he's still a scrawny 6 y/o so I think the AR would be great for him (and me). Light rifle, light recoil, adjustable stock, and just plain fun to shoot. What I'm not sure of is if he could wrap his little hand around the grip and reach the trigger.

O.K. back to the gun counter, the guy finally hands me the AR. Pretty standard 16'' rifle, except the detachable carry handle and telescoping stock. Anyway, I look at it for a minute then hand it to my son (who is drooling by now) he shoulders the rifle and points it at the ground (in a safe direction) then looks down the sights. The clerk tells me that he is not allowed to handle THAT rifle. So I take the rifle from my son, hand it back to the clerk and politely ask why. Here we go!

clerk: He has to be 21 to look at or buy THAT rifle.
me: But the law says 18 or older for long guns.
clerk: Yes, but academy's policy is 21 and older for ASSAULT RIFLES.:fire:
me: So,can you show him that 10/22 over there?
clerk: Sure, he can look at it.
me: So, what's the difference?
clerk: Well the AR-15 is an ASSAULT RIFLE.:banghead:
me: So, what makes it an assault rifle?
clerk: It's tactical, like for police and stuff

I say thank you and walk away to go find a manager who confirms the policy on ASSAULT RIFLES.:cuss: I try to explain to him that Academy does not sell assault rifles and let him know how disappointed I am that Academy would make a policy that would restrict law abiding citizens above and beyond what the law already does.

Academy: The government doesn't know whats good for you, we do.

It's a damn shame cause I liked shopping there.

I can confirm. Happened to me in the Jackson,Mississippi store. They also refused to sell me .22 ammo because I am not 21 even though it is perfectly legal to sell it to me as rifle ammo (I am 20). I will never buy anything from them again as Walmart and Basspro have no problem with letting me look at all of their guns and will sell me anything that it is legal for me to purchase. The local gunshop has been getting a lot of business from me as well.

Hell yes it's true. 21+ for "Tactical" firearms. The clerk has his head up his ass, because so long as the firearm, whatever it may be, is handed to the of-age person, to the young person, back to the of-age, and then back to the clerk, then there are no violations of policy, because the gun was handed off by the customer to the underage.

And I don't give a damn about Academy's policy. I have service members come in from their posting all the time, and many of them are 18 - 20 years old and some of the guys at the gun counter won't let them see the AR's. If they show me a military ID, I'd let them see it, regardless of age. Most other people? Not so much.

Academy has good prices, and the employees get a good discount, but the management and their policies are absolute BS. Then again, working there since December has made me quite volatile about their ways.

I,m working on sending a letter to the corp. office, but I'm not sure what it should say.

I would also like confirmation from higher up than ''store manager'', but at least for now I will not be shopping at THIS store.

I was so hot that I left the $75 worth of stuff in the basket at the store. Stuff I will have to travel all over town to find, and pay higher prices for.

Couldn't somone sue them for age discrimination, the law says 18 for long guns.

You can start by explaining that an AR is not an ‘assault rifle’ and all their firearms sales staff should be educated accordingly - so educated future customers will not experience the nonsense you did.

Dang, I think one of the reasons that I'm angry is that I could get a Bushmaster A3M4 Carbine for $915 with the discount except I'm not old enough.

scndactive, where in Texas are you?

Also, I'm not sure how the folks up at HQ are, but if store managers and directors are any indication, good luck trying to get through.

I thought Wal-Mart had stopped selling firearms? At lease in the Dallas metro they only sell ammo.

God Almighty. I figured the folks down in Victoria would be a little more appreciative of selling firearms rather than giving folks trouble about it.

I'm up at the new store in San Antonio off of 1604/ NW Military. I've got a place down at Goliad that I think a semi-automatic rifle would be the ticket for hogs. I figure only 40 minutes away it's the same situation over in Victoria.

Also offtopic, whatever happened to Texas Radio, I think it was 98.7?

Dallas Metro doesn't have many hunting leases.

The bean-counters at wally world have stopped gun sales in areas where there are little use of them.

Guns are still sold at rural wal-marts.

I am surprised nobody has caught this...

Wow, that is amazing. Your kid is a super genius. He is one of the smartest people on the entire planet. With an IQ possessed by less than 1 in 800,000,000+, he is smarter than the likes of...

World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov is alleged to have an IQ of 190
World Chess Champion Judith Polgar is alleged to have an IQ of 170
Chess Grandmaster Robert Byrne is alleged to have an IQ of 170
World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer is alleged to have an IQ of 167
Physicist Stephen W. Hawking is alleged to have an IQ of over 160
Microsoft Founder Paul Allen is alleged to have an IQ of over 160
Actress Sharon Stone is alleged to have an IQ of 154
190 - Ludwig Wittgenstein
190 - Sir Isaac Newton
190 - François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire)
180 - Leonardo da Vinci
180 - David Hume
180 - Buonarroti Michelangelo
179 - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
175 - Johannes Kepler
171 - Blaise Pascal
170 - Michael Faraday

...and they are going to let him skip just one grade? Victoria must be a tough school district. You have a super genius son and you are worried about dealing with a clerk at Academy?

No wonder he would be bored with a .22. Maybe you should consider buying him a neutron accelerator, the fastest gun in the world. That should keep him from being bored at least until he is 9.

It sounds like your point started with a store having an issue with a 6 y/o handling a rifle. Fine for your home, but not in a store, and not with a rifle that you do not own.

Wow, that is amazing. Your kid is a super genius. He is one of the smartest people on the entire planet. With an IQ possessed by less than 1 in 800,000,000+, he is smarter than the likes of... OUCH, that will leave a mark.

But, of course if you followed your own link you would have found...
Mensa controversy
For many years it was believed that Sharon Stone was a member of Mensa,[35] but in April 2002, she admitted she was not, and had never been, a member of the high-IQ society.[36] Jim Blackmore of Mensa said, "It's delightful to finally see Ms. Stone admit that she's not and never has been a member of our society. But then she goes on to say, 'I went to a Mensa school.' Not so."[36] Blackmore said that would not have been possible as there have been no Mensa schools since the early 1960s.

:neener::neener::neener::neener::neener::neener::neener::neener:

No, I followed that link and others. I wasn't suggesting anything about Mensa, only noting the high IQs of folks and that even the best of the best are few in number and all but a couple are under 200.

A 6 year old with an IQ 1.43 times the genius level probably should be reading well beyond the 3rd grade level in several languages.

Gallo,
per WalMart online.
of course, you have to make sure your WollyWorld has a firearms license before ordering.

Ordering in three simple steps:

Print this page (please be sure to print the Wal-Mart Item #, which is found at the bottom of the Web page)
Go to the Sporting Goods Department at your local Wal-Mart store
Show the printout to a Sporting Goods associate to have them special order your selected item

Uh yeah...

Here are 2 people with ~200 IQ's.

Kim Ung-yong who was able to read and write in 4 languages by his 4th birthday and was a guest of physics at a Korean university from age 3 to 6...He has a similar IQ

and there's Christopher Michael Langan who wrote at book when he was 3...He has a similar IQ.

:scrutiny:

Back on topic, I'm sure everyone thinks that their own child is a genius anyhow, though it never really pans out....

I try to explain to him that Academy does not sell assault rifles and let him know how disappointed I am that Academy would make a policy that would restrict law abiding citizens above and beyond what the law already does.

I'm wondering if a 15 year old with a fist full of Benjamins would be turned down if he requested to handle and buy a M16 airsoft rifle which the store undoubtedly carries.

Airsoft guns are sold straight off the shelves, IIRC.

I bought a Pietta 1858 Remington New Army there without so much as being asked for a driver's license. The clerk who sold it to me asked, "So is that like a real gun or something?"

Other than generally ignorant staff (which is typical of all large chains), I don't have any problem with their policy. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I can see why they would want it. The Academy near me is located next to a mall and every now and then you'll have the occasional group of village idiots in street attire wandering over to the gun counter to examine the various nickel-plated 9mm firearms and easily-recognizable rifles such as the AR-15. The 21 year old thing at least keeps some of them from waving guns around.
