Academy Sports & Outdoors, This makes me sick

Yep this is true. I worked at an Academy store in Waco. My manager told me this rule, and even he knew it was stupid but he said it had to be enforced. I didnt ever distinguish between 18 and 21 when showing a long gun, and certainly didnt follow the
"21 to look at Assault Rifles" rule. Pure BS. In my opinion, the law takes priority over some corporate rule, and besides it was a summer job.

For what its worth, the same "21 and up" rule also applied to the Beretta Storms that Academy would periodically have in stock, as well as the Carbon 15 rifles.

Ha Ha, a 17 year old can Enlist and be Issued a "tactical" :what: M4 Carbine, with select fire, LOL

You should have told him that little gem.

Yep, they sure can...They can take a job that helps us ensure our beautiful, free nation keeps its freedom; but legally buy a pack of cigarettes? No sir! Want to have a beer with your Dad on your 18th birthday? No-can-do my friend! Want to enjoy a cigar on that special occasion? Are you crazy, that would be illegal!

HOUSTON RELIANT GUN SHOW is all that any Texan needs for firearms. I do not waste time shopping at gun shops anymore.

The world is safer today. Academy clerks vary in quality. The policy probably came from some corporate lawyer who only shoots O/U shotguns at dove released from a box in front of him.

Sometimes it's better to drive a little further to find a better store.

Wonderful to hear about your son. :)

There are a lot of things that annoy me about Academy's gun counter policies and practices. But in the end, they have a wide selection of all kinds of things gun related and not, and they have good prices on virtually everything in the store. Sure maybe one would rather deal with a dedicated local gun dealer but when out running around with the family, getting a handful of misc. stuff it's hard to get too upset with a store that at least HAS guns, ammo and accessories along with shoes, clothes, general sports equipment, etc.

One stop shopping, it's convenient, what's not to like? If you're looking ONLY for guns go to a gun store. But while I'm in Academy getting snorkeling kits for an upcoming vacation, I'll grab some 9mm ammo and not nit pick their policies.

Interesting they picked 21 for the age. When I was 17 I was handed an M16 and got to shoot stuff like the M60 etc. I guess Academy thinks someone like myself should have to wait 4 years past boot camp to even be able to see an AR. :barf:If the govt. can train you to kill people at 17, you should be able to handle any firearm made IMO.

When you send your letter to Academy, BE SURE to include a copy of your receipt for the rifle purchased at one of their competitors, and make it a point to say that they lost that sale and many like it due to their head-up-their-assesness.

The clerk was doing his job, but interesting policy.

From a shooting range's perspective, my local indoor range allows minors to handle their rental guns when their immediate parent is with them to sign off a waiver. No uncles, aunts, 21 year old buddy, etc.

But that's pretty ridiculous. Especially that most laws allow 18 year age to handle RIFLES.

"me: So, what makes it an assault rifle?"
"clerk: It's tactical, like for police and stuff"

BZZZZZZZZZT! Wrong! An assault rifle, my dear ignorant clerk, is 1.) a carbine sized individual weapon with provision to fire from the shoulder that is 2.) capable of selective fire, 3.) chambers an intermediate-power cartridge of a power somewhere between pistol and traditional rifle, and 4.) its ammunition is supplied from a large capacity detachable box magazine. If it doesn't have all four of these characteristics, it is not an assault rifle.

Know what's scary? There are government agents who don't know this.

I'm in Victoria, also. Moved here from Corpus in March of this year.

A place I like to recommend down in this area is Modern Pawn and Jewelry over on Airline down in Corpus. It might be worth your time to go down there and check it out.

That doesn't sound exactly right, does it? It is true, though, that the best gun store in Corpus is a pawn shop / jewelry store. Lots of new guns, including a pretty good selection of so-called "assault rifles". They are the friendliest people in the world.

The Academy down in Corpus really gets on my nerves. The folks working the gun counter there are a bit loud for me.

.

I think I can understand the reasoning for a policy that was probably instituted not to deter people from viewing and buying the weapons that they choose, but to give the kid behind the gun counter a bit of a break from 11 year olds that want to play with AR's while their parents are trying on shoes.

Here are 2 people with ~200 IQ's.

Kim Ung-yong who was able to read and write in 4 languages by his 4th birthday and was a guest of physics at a Korean university from age 3 to 6...He has a similar IQ

and there's Christopher Michael Langan who wrote at book when he was 3...He has a similar IQ.

WOW I had no idea!!!

A little about my 6 y/o. This past year in kindergarten his teachers suggested testing him for the gifted and talented program, we knew he was a bright kid but had no idea his I.Q. test would top 200

Thats what the teacher from the scool told my wife ,so I just took it as fact. I will be reqesting the test scores.

Sorry about anything misleading.

Back to the subject at hand. The reason the manager gave me was. "We have had problems with 18 and 19 y/o's coming in and buying ASSAULT RIFLES and robbing stores with them."

Ya, because no one would ever think of robbing a place with that $249 pistol grip 12 guage sitting next to the $1000 AR, so they'll gladly sell the shotgun to the 18 y/o

Your reasoning holds no water.

your position of "control" floats like a brick.

When a company that profits from the rights that the 2A protects then turns on the people they profit from by making policy that restricts those rights, that company is truely lost.

Only one Acadamy Sports here. It`s in Spartenburg, S.C. about 45 miles distant . I went in there once. I saw their prices on nearly everything are higher than in other stores closer to me. :what: I won`t go back to Acadamy Sports.:neener:

Acadamy <---- sounds as though guns and shooting are for little boys.;)

Do what ever your want....simply put Academy can have corp policies that exceed BATFE. It is their store just cause the law says a person can...does not me they have to .......

i agree 45ACPUSER... and you know there are hundreds and thousands of stores that don't even carry these evil guns. do you not shop at Kohl's because they don't have holsters or gun belts?

At least Academy sells guns, ammo and accessories. Beats most sporting goods stores in that regard. So let's all reward their policy, which is clearly against the grain of other similar stores, by getting all bunched up because they don't allow children to handle what in their mind are "assault rifles". Maybe if we are lucky, they'll stop selling guns altogether since all of us soap-boxers are going to go buy from a real gun store anyway.

I work the gun counter at an Academy in Austin, Tx and was surprised at their "21 to purchase assault rifles" policy when I started. I talked to my manager about it and he agreed at the stupidity, but said it's corporates policy so we have to follow it. Even though we get a pretty good discounts on firearms I still plan on buying my next gun at the local gun shop just to support local business. I will say that we get great discounts though so I don't plan on quitting anytime soon ;)

Well, since criminals don't usually purchase their stuff legally... About the only thing I'd think a policy like that would have an impact upon would be the instances where the fashion/musically challenged decide to go out with a bang...

It is true

I am an employee of Academy here in College Station, TX, unfortunately I have to refuse 19 y/o men who have enlisted to fight for our country. Academy's rule is stupid. This goes farther than AR's though. Any shotgunn with a pistol grip, Beretta CX Storm, and anything that can be deemed as out of the norm for hunting. It is quite stupid, but their rule is quite flexible. I will allow a father to let his son handle the rifle to see if it fits him, but I absolutely cannot sell any "tacticle" wepon to anyone under the age of 21. So far this is the main conflict I have found against Academy, but outside of the additional rule added, there has yet to be a rule set in place that I cannot overlook. I hope this clarifies. Thanks!
