doomsday prepper N/D

after telling us how often he trains out in the desert he then loudly professes that one can never have enough guns or ammo all before shooting himself in the thumb because the "darn thing misfired":fire:. would love to see the unedited video(more likley than not featuring his boogerhook on the bang switch) but they edited it out. that was just contestant #1

This isn't the ESP board. You're going to have to provide some sort of background reference rather than assume that we're reading your mind.
Some sort of link to a video, news article,... heck, how 'bout we start with a name we can Google.

I recorded it - a spoiler alert would have been nice... :)

He'll probably be declared a mental defective later this week.

Anyone else watch "Doomsday Preppers" on the Natural Geographic Channel last night? For those of you that didn't, during the filming a guy (the prepper being featured in the segment)just about blew his thumb off with a 10/22. What they showed of it was pretty grusome. Did it in front of his kids and everything. Luckily there was an EMT with the camera crew. I guess you really can't be too careful. Sorry if this has already been discussed.

was watching it with my wife (after just coming from the range no less) - couldn't believe it. Showed him trying to fiddle with the 10/22, then the screen went black. his quote, the thing misfired and my thumb was near the muzzle. Pretty important lesson for his kids though....Don't go on a reality show...

It was not an accident: It was gross negligence.

oh not this again......

so you are saying he shot himself on purpose?.......no?.....then it was an accident.....QED.

I saw that episode also, overall a really poor example of gun safety and discipline. Walking around with fingers on the trigger, and so on.

Really...and they didn't give him a chance to show off his doomsday medical skills?

He passed out.

He apparently had his thumb in front of the muzzle. He probably had the stock on the ground and was holding it upright by the end of the barrel. I’m not sure how it went off.

It was kind of a dumb show all around.

I liked the first couple I saw. They tested the ballistic survivability of their container home by shooting at it with .22 lr. carbines from 100 yards. When the rounds did not penetrate, they deemed their home ballistically safe from attack...because .22 lr is a common caliber that might be used against them...as if .22 lr was a substantial caliber.

I will check for the episode with the ND. All in all, I am not surprised. As near as I can tell, these folks have taken a decent idea and twisted into near religious fervor at the expense of abandoning anything resembling a normal life.

jsimmons, no spoiler altert is needed as the show is already rotten! ;)

Good news was that they had to pry his gun from his warm, bloody fingers.

Poor gun handling practice. Always point muzzle in a safe direction. Always check the chamber, he failed and for whatever reason he paid the consequence. The bad part is its on Natl Geographic TV. But i do commend his resourcefulness in being a prepper. Maybe he was caught up with the showbiz acting and slip on his safety precautions. Just bad mojo.

Neglegent handling of the firearm resulting in the individual shooting the self isn't much of a surprise and isn't particularly worth of discussion in and of itself.

What is worthy of discussion is what the lessons learned are that we might take away to help ourselves and others prevent such an incident instead of "Oh nos!" and "Moron!" comments.

Follow the safe gun handling rules consistently to engrain it to become habit.
Don't handle the firearm without the action being open.
Any misfire should cause you to keep the weapon pointed in a safe direction for at least a minute to allow for discharge of the round.

Maybe I have a lousy imagination. NDs resulting in self-inflicted injuries are not difficult to comprehend with a handgun. How do you wrap your mittens on the end of a rifle barrel and discharge the firearm?

I didn't see it yet but it is on my DVR...I love that show but some of the people don't think...like the guy (not on the show) who was showing someone his gun in a closet and it went through the wall and shot the pastor in the head...how stupid are people? Check your stuff before playing with it and don't pull the trigger until you have....then again the average US IQ is 82 now and 80 is considered mentally retarded...so I guess that is the answer to my question...lol

I agree with this, it seems hard to do.

The real question is what kind of Doomsday Prepper uses a 22lr??? Would you be taken seriously by all the other Doomsday preppers if you showed up at a gathering armed to the teeth with your 10-22 and a bunch of 10 round rotary mags???

If I was preparing for the end of the world, I would think 223 would be the minimum rifle I would want.
