Accused gator poacher says he was protecting daughter

Gators are pretty easy going, but a FELONY charge seems way too harsh even if he did shoot too soon. There were a ton of them slinking around in the drainage ditches when I lived down south in the late 70's, and from all I've heard the population has boomed since then. Shooting one is scarcely a crime against humanity.

if you keep a gator in a tiny aquarium, they wont get big right? would make an interesting conversation pet.

I think that only applies to certain FISH. Gators start small and get bigger and bigger and bigger. It doesn't matter how big the aquarium is. Lots of people have discovered this and had to relocate Jr. to the sink, then the bathtub, then the nearby creek :D

Both the gator and the croc are smiling so nicely for their pictures. Does that mean they're cute and cuddly too?

I remember in the early 80's a gator got into the duck pond at the IBM plant in Boca. The people didn't figure it out till they had restocked the ducks into the pond several times, "Gee, where are all the ducks going?"

The gator was a happy and very well fed camper until they found him/her out.

:D

I hope you two are being sarcastic...
I was.
I've lived in Fla most of my life and am pretty tired of the outlanders and carpetbaggers coming down to get away from the big cities, only to try to turn my whole state into one.

They come down buy houses on lakes in semi rural areas to enjoy nature and then complain that nature gets in their way.

They see any snake, no matter how harmless, as a deadly threat and kill it, then they complain when insects, rats and lizard invade their homestead.
They threaten to sue their bugman if they get stung by a wasp or bit by a fire ant. They always claim that they are allergic or that the animal was attacking, even from 100 yards away with it's back turned, sound asleep

Here's some simple rules for would be transplants

If you can't stand the heat stay out of Fla

Bugs are considered the Fla welcoming committee, get used to them

If you don't like the ugly animals that come with nature then move to Jax, Tallahassee or Orlando and never venture far from downtown areas, or better yet never leave your home

The second article presented suggest that maybe the dean is just some shoot happy gun-nut.
I for one thank him for pointing out that he's not in the NRA

To a point gators and most reptiles will grow to their enviroment, but not to that point.

Why the hell are ya'll under the impression that the alligator looks like a crocadille?

Definition of Resemble
Re`sem´ble Pronunciation: r?-z?m´b'l
v. t. 1. To be like or similar to; to bear the similitude of, either in appearance or qualities; as, these brothers resemble each other.
[imp. & p. p. Resembled (-b'ld); p. pr. & vb. n. Resembling (-bl?ng).]
We will resemble you in that.

Does any body fail to see the similarities and resemblance of crocs and gators

In a world where cows and hunting buddies are mistaken for deer is it really that difficult to see

I left Fla but it wasn't the heat. IT WAS THE HUMIDITY!! :neener:

The bugs and all I mostly got along with. I thought the little geckos running around everywhere was pretty cool. My dog didn't do too good with the fleas though. Best thing I ever did for that dog was get it out of Florida.

I serviced A/C 3 summers there :barf: I kept getting laid off in the winter though. Another reason I left.

I hear West Palm is all built up now too, when I was there it was pretty much desolate. I liked it better that way I think.

I think that species that are endangered should allowed to become exticed. If the greens want to save them then they should spend thier own money.

You're absolutely right. The biggest supporters of seasons and bag limits are greens.

Right?

What? Sportsmen groups? Huh? Hunter advocacy groups want what?

I was.

I wasn't. evolve or become excited. Dangours annimers have to be hunted in order to "teach" the species fear of man.

Amen and right on target Joab.
Additionally I love to read all the online macho men rambos wannabees post talking about how they would blow away this and blow away that and don't care who says what or what laws are what. IMO the Dean is nothing but a lair and an idiot. A wild 4 foot gator charging and attacking a human? Thats total BS.
I encounter big bull and nesting momma gators on a regular basis and can find north american crocs without any problem. Only twice in over 20 something years have I ever had a gator intentionally come towards me and on both occasions it was a gator that was being fed by idiot humans. A human fed gator will be a dead gator it is a sad simple fact. Once habituated they are doomed.
Those that say blow them away have no idea of what they speak. Gators are far more complex than most people realize and extremely important to the survival of mutiple fish, birds and mammal species in Fla. If you want to live gator free stay in a gator free area(read out of fla). Don't come down here and try to ruin it for those that truely appreciate the real florida. And by the way I get serious satisfaction turning in poachers of all kinds and don't care who knows it. :neener: And anybody that thinks there is no danger shooting at a item floating errrr I mean "charging" on the surface of the water is dangerous and shouldn't have a gun.

P.S. Why in the world would anyone with even half a brain allow their child to fish from the bank or wade fish if they truly felt a resident gator in the area was a danger. If the Dean does turn out to be the liar and idiot I feel that he is, throw the book at him!

The next day, May 13, fish and wildlife officers pulled two bullets from a high-powered, 30.30 lever-action hunting rifle from the dead gator.
That's the crux of his problem. If he had only used an ordinary, low-powered .30-30 there wouldn't have been any reason for concern about stray shots. But NOOOOOO! He had to go and use a HIGH-powered .30-30.

Anybody know where I can buy one of those?

Agree, the few gators I did come in contact with when there wanted even less to do with me than I did with them. I neither fed nor shot them. Just observed them while they observed me.

A small child might be another thing though...

wait a minnit!

A 3foot alligator charged me once...and all I did was throw a rock at it to make it move---I don't do that no more,it was plenty scary to this New Yorker visiting the south as a kid to have a dinosaur come hissing and charging---even if I had a gun I would have never reacted in time, it was quick!

If I had a nine yr old daughter I wouldn't let her play near the gators,I'm sure a 4 footer would consider a 9yr old to be prey.

but the idiot dean "isn't in the NRA" so don't come crying to us buddy boy, your getting what you vote for,I bet he voted for Kerry!!!
