for application to a general duty ar....
acog or eotech? I kind of like the acog as it does not require batteries
and the marines can't destroy it....but suspect the eotech may be a bit
easier to use....anybody got experience with both and got a true preference?
thanks....

If you are referring to the 3.5 or 4x magnified ACOG, it's totally different than the EOTech, which is a 1x red dot sight.

If you need mid to long range capability, the 3.5 or 4x ACOG is a better choice.
Otherwise either the EOTech or Aimpoint M3 are the 1x red dots of choice.

thanks

thanks...not familiar with these things....what is advantage of the acog in close quarters? is it just a long eye relief type of scope?

advantage in this sense...
a. why would I want an acog over up sights to 100 yards?
b. within 50 yards or so does advantage go to eotech or the acog for quick, effective target acquisition?

I am just on a learning curve here...and will probably select one at
end...thanks again....

Please do a search here on "ACOG" "EOTECH" and "AIMPOINT". We've covered them all in detail before.

The ACOG will increase your ability to ID targets at all distances. It can allow you to hit targets smaller than you can get a sight picture on at 100 yards. It will be easier to make hits on smallish targets (2-4 MOA) out to 400 yards, and larger targets out to 600 yards.

The AIMPOINT or EOTech will be much faster at less than 100 yards.

Trijicon produces a 1x ACOG reflex sight, in addition to their magnified sights.

Pretty rugged. The time I was at my unit we broke exactly one of the ACOG 4x sights and zero reflex sights. More robust than the Aimpoints (which were good quality, too...not knocking them...we started with 3000s & ended with CompMs).

Some have problems with the dot washing out and with the fixes* to this problem: polarization filter, fogging of same.

Some like the ACOG reflex, some like the Aimpoint, & some like the EOtech. I have no experience with the EOtech. Both Aimpoint & ACOG reflex worked well. If your intended use is for competition, I would suggest use whatever is the conventional wisdom in that milieu. If you just want a reflex sight for your black gun, any will do the job. Wait for a good deal.

* It gets an asterisk becasue some folks never had the problem in the first place, so they never used the filter or the fixes.

Also, the current Aimpoint is the CompM3, which is a few generations removed from the one jfruser used and has been improved with regards to ruggedness, dot brightness and battery life (around 50,000 hours or some incredible number now)
