I have a machine shop for work, self employed (unemployed :) ) I am interested in building my own silencer, pay the tax, do the paperwork, wait a year, perfectly legal. Nuff said.

What I want to know is info for the anti and pro RKBA types that will consider my possesion of such a thing to be outrageous. I have not ever heard of crimes or stats involving suppressors. I owned a .50BMG and got alot of "you plan on shootin' down a plane" type lunacy from people. I am already getting "silencers are for killing people" just for thinking about this.

Does anyone have any links to some stats showing crimes involing suppressors. are there any? I could turn up nothing in Google. Thanks

If they were used enough to record statistics for, someone would have pushed harder for a total ban by now....and I can't see much resistance to a ban from any of our current politicians, so I would assume that they are not used much...if at all.

Yes but without actual #'s people feel free to argue it one way or another. Stats-while qualifying inder the "lies, damnable lies, and statistics" clause of an argument, are none the less usefull. and a lack therof leaves the other guy open to the "95% of all statistics are made up on the spot" clause.

If there isn't any then I need to show that as well. I might also need to show it to the LEO in my jurisdiction in the paperwork process.

Idaho is a Class III State. :) I know several people who own suppressors, with the proper "tickets." One friend of mine just last week was showing me a Browning Buckmark with a new suppressor for it. He shoots the .22 in his backyard -- yes, well regulated backstop -- in an unincorporated area of the county.

I called him and asked if he'd heard of any murders being committed here in Idaho by some criminal using a suppressed firearm? He has ties to the D.A's. office. He said he didn't know of any.

Can't speak for the rest of the country in which Class III goodies are allowed, but that's what I know of Idaho. (Not scientific, of course.)

FWIW.

The number of murders involving ANY NFA registered device is extgremely low. I believe they can be counted on one hand, although I can't recall the exact number.
3 of my rifles are supressed, and my .45 has a can. The negative remarks I get are extremely few, and only one LEO has ever asked for any paperwork. I constantly have people shoot my guns to see how much of a difference a good can makes!

Stay legal, have fun and enjoy!!
