"suppressors" vs "silencers" terminology is everything

Just my 2 Cents

I thought a silencer was specific for use with subsonic ammo and a suppressor was for use with duty load when you needed to reach out and touch some at range to help conceal the report and location of the shooter. I.m open to suggestions on this subject.

In practice nobody or almost nobody makes that distinction in modern suppressors because there's no reason to make one that is not rated for full power use. A 30P-1 is the same device if you're shooting full power 7mm WSM or .300 Whisper subsonic. An Osprey 9mm is the same device if you're shooting 9mm +P duty ammo or 147gr subs.

I also prefer the term "suppressor," but I use the term "silencer" simply because if they are being discussed, more people will understand what I'm talking about if I refer to them as "silencers" as opposed to "suppressors"; especially the non-gun and gun novices I know.

For those who have never fired a silenced firearm, they do work and very well. I've fired quite a few M4's that were silenced and they produced less report than a 22 rim fire rifle. The report from the silenced 223's I've fired were barely louder than a CO2 pellet rifle.

My first experience with one was a short barreled M4 5.56, at first I thought it was a 22 rim fire cartridge. Here in my state they are common place.

Any one recommend a good book to educate myself on them other then some U TUBE short film.
Thanks
Go visit a dealer, you will learn a lot and he might even let you test fire one. When I sold suppressors/silencers,I had no problem letting someone test fire them.If you decide to buy your first one,I would suggest a rimfire can.JMHO.

SANDRAT, I wish you were in my state. I've gone to several SOTs and none of them (even the ones with ranges) will let you try out a suppressor to get an idea of what they sound like in person and how they compare to one another. That said, none of them seem to want to help me find a threaded barrel for a P228 that doesn't cost nearly half of what it cost to buy the gun in the first place, so maybe its just that my SOTs suck? :D There's only so much you can get from youtube videos and sound testing...

And I don't want to lump you in with my local guys, but most of them only speak highly of what they have in stock and downplay anything else. I've actually had a guy try to sell me on an old AWC design using outdated technology and claim that the TiRant and Ospreys were junk
I'd hesitate to take any of their advise as gospel.

I used the word interchageably.

The item is called a silencer by the ATF and the inventor. True it doesn't fully silence a weapon but rather suppresses the report, recoil, muzzle flash, and enviromental disturbance(dust shooting prone)

Call it whatever you want. I love when people tell me that it HAS to be called a SUPPRESSOR....yet they don't own one nor have shot one. lol

I think This got a little off topic... I was merely trying to show the trends on google for actual firearms related stuff vs call of duty and james bond. I am not a snob about being grammatically correct: I used the term silencer in the first place in my search... that is why I started this post. I found it funny that the search results for silencer are far less relevant to the results for suppressor... unless you are a call of duty fan.

Just for the record, you guys have ruined me when it comes to "proper terms".
I haven't yet seen ONE news story about Aurora that mentioned high capacity mags. Every one mentioned high capacity clips! I couldn't even watch the news without yelling "IT'S A MAG!!!!!!" at the news person telling the story!

Now I have to worry about silencers and suppressors? You're killing me here! :)
