Actually shot someone?

Has anyone on here ever had to shoot some one in self defense? I'm directing this towards non LE, private individuals who carry legally. If so, what happened and what were the legal ramifications afterwards?
 
Speak with a lawyer in your area. What happens in Arizona is different from Florida.

Also, questions of this type seldom get answered because most folks don't like to talk about it. It ain't a pleasant thing.

Get ready.....If I remember corectlly this question freaks alot of people out........it doesn't bother me when someone ask's a Q like your's.......just don't answer it if you don't want to is the way I see it.

I don't think it'd that bad a question. No, I haven't had to shoot anyone but I heard of someone that did. A woman, alone in the house in Arlington, MA had a break in. A young kid that was high on drugs that refused to stop when she told him to. He was coming in one of the windows (BTW, had a previous brush with the law more than once for petty crimes), she fired her gun and got him in the neck. He survived and his family took HER to court for firing upon him given that he was unarmed and only breaking into her house. Can you believe that?:what: Last I heard from the people at my gun shop, she should have killed him with it. She had to hire a lawyer and the whole mess was going to cost her. The best thing to do is ask law enforcement in your area, consult with a lawyer, or even your local NRA instructor could point you in the right direction. It's not an unreasonable question and very responsible on your part as a gun owner. You may want to ask around for some good reading material from authors knowledgeable on the use of deadly force. Since you are from Florida, I suggest you get a copy of "Florida Firearms Law, Use & Ownership" by Jon H. Gutmacher, Esq. It will provide you with a pile of very useful, factual information. It's used by many Florida police academies and departments. :evil:
 
Well, blackhawk, I'm not a certified Troll Identifier (CTI), but here are some tips

1. Constantly asks annoying questions which serve no real purpose
2. Never thinks twice before saying something dumb

I hope these two tips will help you in the future :D
 
God, I feel bad for the guy that started this thread. Do you realize there's only a few serious responses to his question? I hope he's not insulted. It was a good question.:rolleyes:
 
Well I guess that's why I didn't see any posts on TFL on this topic. I didn't know that it was such a touchy issue. I'm new to the whole handgun and ccw thing. It just seams that everybody carries for a reason and I wanted to know if anyone had to shoot? I've heard stories about people shooting someone and then getting sued big time. It make me wonder if it's worth carrying at all. BTW, what's a troll? I'm serious.
 
I doubt any civilian will respond to the origional question.

Just a thought, Im not looking for accounts, just a question..... Do you guys think a combat veterain is likely to talk about any killing he had to perform in the line of service?

I've no idea what a troll is. Anyway, don't feel bad. I'm new to handguns myself. Posted on another forum about what's the difference between ammo you use at the range and what you use for personal defense. The moderator contacted me to say there were "hecklers" responding to my post and it was removed to the "trash bin" and the heckler's responses deleted. Christ, I didn't think it was THAT dumb a question. Guess I was wrong...:D

Pick up a copy of Combat Handguns and read Massad Ayoob's column. IIRC, it's called Handguns and the Law, but I could be thinking of something else.

Anyway, alot of people of various sites bash Ayoob, but IMO he give pretty decent advice in the columns. I'm not a lawyer, don't know any well enough to check with them, but what he writes makes sense to me.

somewhat on the order of asking another adult if their underwear is clean today; or what kinds of sexual activity your spouse prefers.

It's just not discussed in public.

Please don't think I'm being difficult, but that's a straight explanation of why you won't get many answers.

And no, combat veterans don't publicly talk about their experiences much either.
 
It is indeed a very touchy question but . in part at least, a viable one. Just that there will never be many full answers.

Perhaps the question uppermost is concerned with how people deal with any ''psycho trauma'' and the legal ramifications of such an event.

I carry like most here do but .... it sure as hell is disturbing to hear some stories ..... where the sequele are horrendous, to what seemed superficially at least a justifiable case of self defence.

We are all culpable if we shoot someone .... trouble is if, God forbid, our carry leads us into a scenariop where we do in fact shoot someone ..... can't help wondering how we cope. I am a peace loving guy but ...... sure as hell will defend my life.
