Rendering aid to someone you just shot (moved from Legal)

While I admire your thinking. You sir are a better person than I. For me ,if I was to shoot someone in self defense there would have to be very very good cause to do so. Especially because NY hates us defending ourselves. We have a duty retreat here , lethal force cannot be used unless it's an IMMENENT threat to life of you or another. And if said events transpired,and I did indeed have to use lethal force in this state than that SOB would have deserved it .I will make sure my loved ones are ok,call 911 tell the situation and that's that. Medical attention is the would be attackers problem.

Bones741 - that is exactly what I would do - retreat if possible and only use deadly force if that does not work and my own life is at risk. I would not want to (and I assume nobody else would want that either) shoot at anybody ever, but if I had to, I would want to make sure that the threat is over and will not require first aid. Plus I am sure that myself and anybody else involved in a shooting would be so full of adrenalin that any "first aid" action would not be a good idea anyhow.

I can only speak for myself and I'm not suggesting that others emulate any of my actions. That said, if a person was a danger to me moments ago, they may very well be a danger to me post injury. I am not likely to get anywhere near someone who mere moments ago posed a life threatening danger to me. That's just me

Some of the replies are comical. It’s a joke to think you’d be in a state of mind to help a wounded attacker aside from those who are combat vets and PD with experience.

I’ll stand by what I was taught as a child. Don’t point a gun a anything you don’t intend to kill. Why render aid once you’ve shot to kill? That makes no sense.
Those that would render aid to a wounded attacker, you should just buy a taser or pepper spray. Your being unrealistic.

if/when I fire, it will be to stop the threat. Period. Once the lives of my family and myself are safe, the rest is up for debate.

I could take a life, if I must, and live with myself.
I could not abandon a life and live with myself.

I would not help a wounded attacker who was still filled with hate and spitting venom till his very end....
But,
What if it came to pass that you shot a person with an empty or fake weapon? What if it turns out you knew them? Ya never know what info may come to light once the smoke clears.

to concretely assert that there is no scenario where you may aid a wounded attacker is pretty myopic.
I don't say that with any disrespect, but I am a bit surprised.

Follow the laws in your area and do what you think is right in your heart. As we have seen that may be different for each person depending on the situation. I don't see what can be gained from going over that again and again.
