I got my Redhawk 44 mag 5 1/2", have decided on RCBS carbide dies, plan to load 2400 with CCI 300 primers (like I loaded back in the late '70's), and plan to load 240-250 gr hard cast SWC or Keith style lead boolits for feral hog hunting. I have researched Missouri, Oregon Trail, and Laser Cast brands.
I would appreciate any comments on your experience with any of these boolits, especially in a Ruger barrel. I see offerings in .430 and .431. I know to do it correctly I should size the barrel etc, then pick a boolit. However, I would like to get started asap. From your experience if you were starting out to experiment with this gun and load, which boolit and which diameter would you start with? I would prefer to order 100 and experiment, but seems most sights start at 500 quanity on the better boolits.
So far your answers to my questions have been so very helpful. Thanks, Jack

I have used all three you have mentioned with good results in my Ruger SS Super Blackhawk 10". I like the Missouri Bullet 230 grain SWC the best sized to .431 with medium pressure loads. Second choice for accuracy would be the Laser Cast but they would be more accurate when shot at higher velocities. IMHO they would all be a good choice. If you can get a small sample for test purposes that would be best then buy a bunch of what your pistol loves and shoot em up.:D

It will only take ten minutes to slug a barrel and cylinder throats. For a W.A.G. .431"...

A quick and easy way to check if a bullet's diameter is right for your revolver throats, is to drop the questioned bullet into the CLEAN cylinder, while the cylinder is pointing down. If it falls through quickly, it's probably too small. If it falls through after some hesitation, or after shaking the cylinder, or pushing it through lightly with a pencil or dowel, its the correct size.
