Advice on a Garand Purchase

I'm considering trading a handgun for an HRA Garand from the CMP. The owner does have the certificate from the CMP but he is not sure of the grade, he believes it is a correct grade. The trigger group, barrel, receiver, and bolt are all HRA; the op rod is not. Would a correct grade be 100% HRA? The owner says he values the rifle at $800, would you say that is a fair value? The wood (other than the finish) does look pretty good along with the metal. I've yet to see it in person however.

Jump on it! From what I see in your pictures, that Garand is in fantastic shape. Garands are getting harder and harder to come by; I'd get that one as soon as possible.

And, don't forget the ammunition...Greek surplus (HXP) and Lake City ball ammo is available from CMP.

Definitely. Is the Greek surplus brass safe to reload?
 
Yes, a correct grade will be all HRA if it's an HRA rifle. That's the criteria difference between service and correct grade. The barrel wear specs are the same for the two grades.

that's some interesting staining on the wood. The stocks were not stained in service - they were oil finished natural wood color. The areas without the dark color look about right - did the guy use his rifle for hunting and get it slopped with blood?

Thank you, that's what I was looking for. I'll let him know what he has :D

I don't know much about wood or refinishing, do you think the stain could be removed?
 
$800 for an immediate grab....do it! You can't go wrong!
There's a bunch of tricks with the wood, from steaming dents to oven cleaner for clearing grease out of pores.
I'd get a repro stock and put your original aside as is. Chances are Your HRA is in an original stock and would be worth more down the road, than a cleaned up one....if you ever want to sell the rifle!
 
My friend recently bought a correct grade from CMP and it came to over $950 with S&H.

I think you should go for it. Op rods can be frustrationg and there is a bit of voo doo in getting them right.
 
Would the people at the CMP verify the grade if you called with the serial number?

Can you get him to print out the online order receipt showing that he ordered a Correct grade? I believe that also has the serial number.
 
IMO, if you really want a Correct grade or THAT rifle, get it. The price isn't all that much higher than you would pay for an aftermarket and it is nice and has mostly HRA parts. You might price out an HRA op rod to replace the one there also.

If you are having 2nd thoughts, go to www.odcmp.com and see about ordering your own Service Grade.

Thank you for that, friend. I called them today with the serial number and it turns out the rifle left the CMP as a Greek rack grade. I believe I'll continue searching :D
 
Don't give it up so fast, friend. Call or contact the seller with that information, and a counter offer--say, $650 or so. That would be a fair price, IMHO--and you'll still get your Garand.
 
The CMP isn't selling Rack grades, but the Field grades are 495 plus shipping. I agree that 650 isn't so bad as far as 3rd party CMP guns go. Without the paperwork, I am not so sure. If you took the trouble to order through the CMP, you could get a Service grade for that.

Glad you were able to check the SN with the CMP. I would hate to pay for a Correct or higher grade if it wasn't.
 
The CMP has some very nice Service Grade M1's right now for $595. Mine only took 18 days from the day I dropped the paperwork in the mail.
 
The Certificate of Authenticity that comes with a Correct Grade says " M1 Garand Correct Grd", with the serial number. The Certificate which accompanies the Service Grade merely says "M1 Garand", and of course, the serial number.

Glad you were able to confirm that it was actually a Rack Grade.
