advice on buying a 45acp please

Hi,
I have limited funds as most do anymore but being a "gun nut" I can always keeps a few bucks earmarked for my toys. Anyway, I have been looking for a 1911 in 45acp. I have seen a couple Springfield Mil Spec 1911 and if I am correct, one said Geneseo,Il..made in Brazil. The other I saw said just Geneseo,Il. Where is it made? Were the older ones made here and the newer in Brazil? If they were made in Brazil then should I also be looking at a Taurus? I have had 2 Colts in the past and regret selling them, especially the Combat Elite. I want a low end 45. I have a RIA in 38 super and it's fine and very accurate. I'd like to buy American this time if I could. Seems like everything American made is outsourced anyway. I'd like to hear some opinions on a good low end 45...Remington,RIA, SA, Taurus,etc. What little I have read about Remington, they are neither the best choice or low end in price. But I have only read a little about them and did see some Youtube about them. Any info would be appreciated!!

Springfield Armory, bought the name, based their operations in Geneseo, IL. ALL of their frame and slides are forged in Brazil. If it is assembled more than 50% in Brazil it must be stamped on the side. If it is assembled more than 50% in Geneseo they can stamp just that on the side. Geneseo uses the same slides, frames and small parts they use in Brazil, the hope is, that the local guys spend a little more time on fit and finish.

What he ^^^^^^ said about SA. Parts all come from Brazil it just depends on where it was assembled as to how it's marked.

Colt and Ruger are the only American made that come to mind and I don't think you could go wrong with either.

I believe that STI is also American made but I don't know that for sure.

I have a Springfield GI that I picked up a few years ago that's been nothing but great. No issues except for the sights (which I knew going in with the GI model) are hard to see most of the time. Got it for something like $600, but its stamped as made in Brazil.

I recently picked up a Remington R1 that I haven't shot yet, but the fit and finish are really nice on it (to my untrained eye) and I like the classic lines without the gadgets, excepting for the sights which are nice and easy to see.

Now that we've seem to have shaken the -25 to -50 degree temperatures every day, I might even get it out this weekend and see how it runs.

I believe Para Ordnance is US made also, and their GI Expert is reasonably inexpensive.

It's now ParaUSA. Colt, Ruger, S&W, Kimber, Dan Wesson, Remington, Sig, Auto Ordnance, Ithaca, STI (except Spartan), Les Baer, Wilson, Double Star, Nighthawk and Ed Brown are all US made. Some small parts on many of the above will of course be farmed out.

Nothing wrong with another Colt if you liked your previous Colts.

I have a Taurus PT145 and I really like it. It is small enough you can conceal it and the trigger pull is very light and short. It is as accurate as any gun I have owned and is very comfortable to shoot for at least 200 rounds at a time. It is pretty inexpensive new and the box store I use will send it back for warranty with no hassles and no shipping costs. I had to send it back for a jamming in the mag issue and they returned it to me in two weeks. It also has a lifetime warranty.

I know it's not a 1911, but I'll second the poster who suggested the Springfield XD. I got one with the 5-inch barrel; it's very accurate, easy to shoot and can be found at pretty reasonable prices (e.g. here).

I have a Springfield 1911-A1 and have no complaints - it has been accurate and reliable for the 10+ years I have had it. Brazilian components are from IMBEL, which is an enterprise owned by the Brazilian Ministry of Defense (essentially their version of the original U.S. Springfield Armory. Always thought that was a nice irony.

A friend has a Taurus 1911, and he's had problems with the slide failing to lock back. It also does not feed hollowpoints very well. Taurus is a private company with not related to IMBEL.

I love 1911,s......but when I got my XD 45. I was blown away..14 rounds of 45 slim grip shoots like a dream and is very reliable

The best low end 1911 is the Rock Island,made by Armscor. I have 3 and no complaints and I shoot my guns a lot. You should be able to get a Tactical for less than $500,and that is with the extended beaver tail,improved trigger and decent fixed sights. The GI should be about $400.

sti spartan is a rock island gun (phillipines mfg) with sti trigger guts. It's a good gun but a little plain looking.

taurus 1911 - the one I had had a 3lb crisp trigger, ate everything, and was pretty accurate. the finish was thin on my early model gun.

RIA makes a pretty good gun.

how about the witness elite match in 45? I sold all my other automatics after I got my EM because it was the only one I shot any more.
