If I was going to get a .45 ACP right now I'd look very strongly at the M&P because it's profile doesn't increase it size. A 1911 would be sweet but there are so many options it's too difficult for me to narrow down what I want and/or I might be compulsed to buy more so I'm waiting on that till I have more money to throw around; I have other priorities at the moment. The M&P though is a sweet deal right now. The only thing I don't like is I think they need to change the takedown process. It seems to me if they made a pistol to compete with glock/xd they would've incorporated a very simplistic takedown process.

Unless he's dedicated to the 1911 system (few truly are) then he'd be better served with either a:

Glock 21 or 21 SF (SF is my preference of the two)

XD-45, either 4" or 5" without thumb safety.

M&P .45, without thumb safety.

The 1911's and decocking guns like the Rugers require the shooter to master more handling protocols to be safe with them.

If he wants a 1911 I think S&W are the cream of the crop at their price range...mine has been flawless so far and extremely accurate...I also have a Glock 30, though, because my 5'' 1911 is a little heavy at 41 grams to lug around concealed, and its just too nice of a gun to sweat on all day. If I had gotten a cheaper one I would do it in a heartbeat, but since I sprung for one that was a little out of my price range (even though it was used!) I decided that between not wanting to mess it up and its weight, it would be better left as a pistol that wasn't getting a lot of abuse. So I would say that for his situation he should shop around a bit and feel some non-1911 pistols, just to see if he thinks any might fit the bill. If not, (and I really don't think there is any replacement for one of these) then he should go for the 1911, and I highly recommend the S&W.

Magnum Research Baby Eagle. Its practically the same design as the CZ. I have fed mine all sorts of different ammo. As long as you keep a firm wrist it eats it up just fine. I also have an M&P, which I love. You would be happy with either selection I am sure.

Blind Justice,
I can't seem to find the 1991 Colt Commander on Bud's website for the price you stated, please inform me, Thanks Floyd

SIG 220: a nice, traditional d/a that offers a slim profile due to single stack magazine configuration, reliable as rain on a picnic and no redundant safety to fumble with.
