Auto-Ordnance .45.

A friend who has terminal leukemia has gifted me a few firearms, one of which is an Auto-Ordnance .45 pistol. It's a 1911 style handgun in stainless steel, and is still new in the factory box. Hoppy is one of those guys who just buys guns and squirrels them away and doesn't shoot them. This gun is typical in that he fired it a few times, and put it away.

I don't know anything about the company or the gun. I carried a 1911A1 when I was in the army, but it was a Colt. So...

Is the Auto-Ordnance a decent gun or a Colt clone of so-so quality? Is it reliable enough to be used for home defense? And can it take the Colt/surplus magazines?

The one I had (An early 90's version) was terrible. Gritty trigger, wouldn't feed reliably, the front sight popped out. I got rid of it. But yes, it does take G.I. magazines. I would at least shoot it a bit to see if it works well.
