AIM Surplus and Finn M39s...

For those who don't know, are they supposed to be better or more accurate? Is it worth the extra money?

The Finns completely rebuilt the guns using Russian receivers. They used improved sights and were VERY picky about accuracy.

The Finn M39 is one of the most accurate milsurps, up there with the K31 and Swede. I'll leave it to the fanboys to say which is best. :neener:

M39's

The best deals on the AIM rifles are the Tikkas. Those are great prices. The others are okay for like new rifles. I have 5 M39s in various conditions and all are great shooters - under 2" groups at 100 yards. Very solid rifles. There isn't any difference in manufacturing quality, just differences in numbers made. The Tikkas are among the rarest with VKT and Sako being the most common.

If you're not a collector, it's not really worth the extra $$ to get a Tika barrel as opposed to a Sako or VKT. The M-39 in general is a great Mosin. It's on the heavy side, but it has the semi-pistol grip stock with the heavy foreend that a lot of shooters seem to prefer.

I've owned a bunch of M-39's, and it always seems like one will shoot super with one kind of 54R load, while another will shoot poorly with the same load. With experimentation I've usually been able to find one load that a given M-39 will shoot MOA or close to it. HOWEVER, I have NOT had good luck with that fat stock. The SA saved some money by not using a barrel sleeve like the Civil Guard's 28/30, and there's a price to pay. All that birchwood out there does indeed interfere with the barrel esp. as things heat up. I have found without exception that my M-39's get better groups--sometimes MUCH better--when placed in a sporter stock.

I really prefer the late-model Tika 91/30's and M-91's. But that's the great thing about Mosins--there's one for every taste :D

A guy I shoot with frequently has a Finn M39. He routinely shoots 2" groups at 100m with the iron sights (shooting cheap ammo too.)
