I'm currently working on converting a Saiga 7.62x39 back to original configuration. I want to put a muzzle brake/flash hider on it, but I don't know which one to use.

The first one I'm looking at is the AK74 design, which seems to be a hefty piece but supposedly works great:

The second one is the Krinkov design, which I think looks cooler but I don't know how well it works:

I'd like recoil reduction but I'd also like flash suppression as well. Can you tell me your experiences with these style brakes or with others that you've used on AK47s?

Thanks!

I have the '74 style one on my SAR-1. It very effectively reduces recoil and muzzle rise, but does little to nothing for the flash. Can't say about the Krinkov one as I have no experience with it.

Flash suppression really isn't an issue unless you're shooting in the dark. I could see SWAT or someone concerned with home defense with their AK looking into serious flash supression...otherwise, your money is better spent on recoil reduction. And for that...there aren't many that work as well as the AK-74 style muzzle brake.

On another note, does anyone have a AK-74 brake that's threaded for 1/2x28 right hand threads, 7.62mm diameter? Where did you find it?

Actually, home defense is one of the roles I would like my AK to fill when finished. Granted, it will be backup to my CZ since the CZ will be easier to get to in a hurry, but if the situation calls for a rifle, I would rather not be blinded in the darkness.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I may just end up buying both and trying them out.

I'm with jlbraun...I too need a brake for my AK but in 1/2"x28 thread pitch.
Global Trades/Armory USA has some but not the one I'm looking for. Other companies claim to make them and are conveniently "out of stock" when I call looking for one.

I think I may have to settle for an AR brake, drop it in my drill press and drill it for the larger 7.62 round.

The vast majority of those AK-74 style brakes are FAKE. They just look like brakes, but they don't do squat.

I'd do my research and make sure that I find one that is made 100% to the original military specification with the internal baffles. Otherwise, it's just a lump of useless metal on the end.
