Hello Folks,

This is a big deal to me. If I have recently beat this subject to death, I apologize.

Any day now my paycheck should arrive. I will purchase a new AK. I have $600 dollars to spend. NO MORE no less. I am heavily leaning towards one of the "Polamanin" franken rifles.

My question. For the money ($600 otd). Is there any other better, more desirable AK variant currently for sale? From what I can ascertain, the "Pole" mix Romak would run otd $585-590 otd from Classic. Atlantic has an Interarms "Maadi" for $599 + SH + ffl.

I have a little money, but like I have stated, that money is very tight.

Arsenal is way out of the $$ equation. What I am asking of you guys; If you had $600 to spend on an AK type this weekend...what would you purchase???

Thanks much, and I really do appreciate your answers...

Search for my thread on the same subject. Good answers there. Ill try and post a link if you can't find it.

You picked the wrong time to buy an AK. Prices have jumped about $150. I would look st the used sights. Mags are still cheap but 10 add up and buy as much ammo as you can afford before that goes up.

I realize, election year and all, I probably should not make an AK purchase. (However, what if current admin. is re-elected?)

1. Am curious about Interarms (Maadi?) AK

2. Leaning towards "Polemanian" offered by Classic for $549

3. WASR M-10 $599

Come this weekend, I will order one of these rifles. Thanks for your help.

I'm in a similar predicament. I want an AK and while I hate paying inflated prices I also realize that the fears that these guns may no longer be available are not completely unfounded.

I've settled on a Waffen Werks AK-74, which is about $100 out of your budget, but I feel its a pretty good deal for what you get. In your price range, a Saiga that you convert and slowely add to yourself would probably be the safest and highest quality bet.

Im not an AK kinda person but my brother is and he bougth one of the WASG AK-47 and that thing can really go shooting for ever. He has put nearly 2000 rounds if not that thru his AK-47 without a single malfunction thru it and he paid $450 for it used OTD. know i

Don't know if this is what your looking for but I would take a look over on one of these to.

Well, what do you want it for? Do you want to just have one to have one? Do you want to just shoot it cheaply and nothing else? Or do you want a quality tool to enforce your will out to 300-400 meters?

Yes to the first 2 questions, get a wasr or i.o. inc. The third question, well thats a converted Saiga (start with the one that has the AK-100 handguards already) or Interarms, minimum. You could also buy used and save some change. It might be worth while to save a little more for a SGL Arsenal. I have a home converted Saiga thats ugly, imho, but slick and runs nice. I love AKs but I'm leaving them for the H&K 91 platform.

Folks...

Thank you so much for your comments. Please correct me if I am wrong, OK?

For what I am looking for, it would seem that Classic, with their basterdised "Polemanian" AK, would be my best choice.

This "Francken" rifle sports a new Polish made reciever, barrell, and trunion. Requisite 5 922 U.S. parrts. The rest made fron Romanian parts kits.

If the rifle functions properly, seems like a good buy.

Thanks

M1Key,

Yes, Atlantic has a lot of choices.

Just a comment here, OK?

Has anyone ever noticed, Atlantic is $50-to-$150 higher across the board on firearms compared to other dealers?

Is their CS THAT much better?

Im in the same situation look at my thread "ak47 which one" posted like a week ago there is some helpfull stuff. i think im buying a romanian one from atlantic with hard case 2-30 rd mags and a bayonete for 599 + shipping and ffl

okiegunner, seems you like the basterdized "polemanian" according to your post #8. we may have a different view on aks, but why would you choose an ak variant like that? is it the catchy name that pulls you to it, for just being different.. i would not even touch that ak, for the simple fact the romy m10 you can get for less than $600 and everything is factory new built at the cugir factory for m+m specifically and they have all matching parts, which i know you dont really care for.

I own more than a few AK type rifles.

For the money the Polish ones aren't bad. They tend to have very smooth actions.

Another option would be to buy an unconverted one and have it converted.

The Russian Saiga's are great rifles. You can get an unconverted one for around $400 and spend a couple hundred on the conversion.

Classic also has a beautiful Yugoslavian under folder in your price range.

It looks as if it also comes with the grenade launcher attachment.
Yugo's are becoming increasingly difficult to find and the price is definitely right.

They're only going to rise, as neither candidate nor president elect is a firearms champion of the people. At the price, I'd buy it. Used WASRs in my LGS are expensive, as are Big 5, and obscure mom and pop shops. Even Armslist Junkers are commanding a small fortune. Get the Pole and don't look back.

Before I saw that you wrote this I was going to write the Polemanian. Right now, I think it's the best deal for a non-used AK on the market. $549 for a new barrel/trunion is sadly tough to beat these days.

Not around my neck of the woods. The last two local gun stores had them in stock. I'd definitely go with the fixed stock version with original barrel, receiver etc.

In buying an AK it is generally preferable, imo, to buy guns with original factory assembled barrels, trunnions and receivers. There are some good US builds but its a dice roll.

Why not go under your 600 dollar budget and purchase a Saiga in either 7.62 or 223. Leave it stock for awhile and then at your leisure change it from the "sporter" configuration to the AK configuration. I can't believe how the prices of all the AK varients has increased.

+1. Ouch, prices are absurd.

Perhaps, but if you let them know you are on THR, and what your username is, I think Atlantic will cut you a discount.

And, Blaine at Atlantic Firearms is a good guy, with solid customer service. If there is a problem they will take care of you. In fact, there are numerous stories of them going waaay beyond the call of duty to make things right.

If I had more cash right now (and I'm selling off most things at this point :( ), I'd be ordering a IO Polish FrankenAK as well. Does anyone know if these have Polish "C" and "P" selector markings?

the new polish underfolders on the market from century are pretty nice, they are processing the last of what they have, the import paperwork is going to release them in the next week or two- if you can grab one, do it, the prices are not unreasonable for what you get (i make no promise to what the end dealer will charge) but don't expect much better than 600 - 650
