AK red-dot sight in

Hey guys,

Just wondering what you guys sight your 7.62x39AK at.

I ask because I have two ranges I go to with it. One has a 25/50/100 yard range and the other has a 35 yard range.

I use my irons because a 25 yard battle setting is good for the 25/50 yards and the 35. I slide it to a hundred yard setting for the longest range. Now that I am going to get a red dot sight I don't know what would be a good range since their is no sliding sight like the back sight.

What do you guys do for 25-100 yards?

If you zero at 100 yards you'll be within 5" out to 180 yards.

I'd zero at 50 yards. Red dots ain't that precise and the AK ain't all that accurate and you should be good from 25-250 yards within 6" or so.

Actually, if you zero at 235 yards (or 4.56" high at 100) you keep the trajectory +-5" out to 275 yards.

Thanks guys, I'm going to try the 50 yard zero since the range is not farther than a hundred yards. I will keep in mind the 235 yard zero for my next AK which will be scoped.

A typical hunting rifle has 1.5 inches between the scope and the barrel, but an AK can be upwards of 3 inches. This really screws you up when you are used to zeroing just American setups. Its best to start at really close range, sometimes I am not even on paper at 20 yds. Sometimes I have to shoot at 10 yds first just to start. Then I go to 25, then 50, then 100. If I recall, if you are on at 100 yds you will be several inches low at 200. I would try to go 4 inches high at 100 yds. That will put you close at 220 yds.

When figuring short-range zeros, it is ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL that you know how high the sight is above the bore.

Once you know the sight height, use the calculator at
http://www.biggameinfo.com/BalCalc.aspx
to figure out what short range zero will equal a good zero downrange.

I zero my AK's iron sights at 200 yards.

When I initially mount my Aimpoints, I place the dot just below the tip of the front sights (top of the dot even with the top of the post) when the iron sights have a proper sight picture. So far, been pretty much right on by doing that. Might have to tweak it a little at the longer distances, but at 25-50 yards, its been plenty close.

If you are using iron sights, the markings indicate meters. 100 meters is 109 yards, 200 meters is 219 yards. According to my ballistic calculator, the POI difference between 100 yards and 109 yards is about .2", between 200y and 200m, it's 1.5". This is certainly a closer tolerance than the accuracy of 7.62 ammo in an AK will give you (which is what, 2-4 MOA at best?).

Set the sight to "1" and zero at 100 yds (a zero at 25yds should get you in the ballpark). Set the sight to "2" and check that your POI moves up about 3.5" at 100y. You may need to find a happy medium somewhere in there. (A zero at 50yds on "2" should get you in the ballpark for a 200M zero)

BTW, the front sights on my SAR1 and PSL both measure 1.8" from the center of the bore.

If you are using a scope or red dot, 3.5" high at 100y should give you a reasonable "battle zero" out to 200m.
