OK, I know this topic has probably been beaten to death, but I'm not finding what I need through a search.

I have a Polish AKM folder that I installed a Mojo peep sight on (not the click-adjustable one ... mine is adjustable for w. and e. using Allen set screws).

I would like to set up this puppy such that bullet trajectory would not ever be more than about 3 inches high or low out to about 200m.

Does anyone know what range I should zero it to achieve this? The front post is currently ~ 2 inches above the CL of the bore (but I don't have the front sight tool to change this), and I'm using Golden Tiger 124-gr FMJBT ammo.

I'm accustomed to sighting in my bolt-action .270 (whose scope CL is 1.5 inches above the bore CL) at ~ 25 yds and then it's on again at ~ 200 yds ... I'm looking for a similar down-and-dirty sight-in recipe for my AKM.

Somewhere I read that it should be dead-on at 21 yards and then it will be no more than ± 3 inches out to around 219 yards ... does that sound right?

Thanks for any help.

Set the rear sight to the "1" position (100 meters) and zero the rifle at 25 meters. This will zero the rifle for the settings on the rear sight. For shooting from 25 to 300 meters, set the rear sight on the battle sight setting (usually a "P" but I won't swear to it) and you won't be more than a couple inches off POA. (Can't remember exactly how many inches at the moment, but that is what you're looking for.)

Edit: I just saw the bit about the peep sight. I believe the battle sight setting is the same elevation as the 300 meter setting so that should serve your purposes nicely.

Set it to "1" and zero at 100 meters and your rifle is zero'd to the sights. The "P" or "П" setting is for putting shots within 16" of POA at any range. It actually correlates to a 250-300 yard setting if you go by regular elevation notches.

Depends on the ammo and your long distance target range, with a M16, it's 25m for 300m
meaning, at 25m you aim for the same point you would at 300m

But with an AK, and if you are using a scope, it depends.

Because of the ballistics of 7.62x39 you really can't keep a +- 3" arc out to 200 yards. At last not with the velocities I've been getting. 4.5" or so is doable though.
You can with a high-mounted optic (e.g., a Kobra), since the extra height gives you room for a little more loft. A 7.62x39mm with a Kobra (3.8" sight height) zeroed at 50 is right on at ~190 and stays within 2.2" of the line of sight from 20 to 210 yards. I think you're right with regard to the irons, though.
