AK's Don't Shoot??

Same here - My SLG-21 Saiga performs similarly in the 2-2.5 MOA neighborhood.

I actually prefer the AK sights over the AR (though I'm using EOtech and Aimpoints on my ARs now, but still iron sights on my AKs).

I won't go that far. :) I find the AR aperture sights to be vastly better than AK sights in just about every respect.

But it's as Taliv said - it's all about managing expectations.

My Vepr .308 will hold 2moa with off the shelf ammo. My Romanian x39 will do about 4moa with a red dot and Barnaul ammo. My FN CHF barreled AR will only hold about 2moa with fmj's.

4 MOA from a 2 MOA dot is in effect a 2MOA group, from my way of thinking. My astigmatism is bad enough to prevent using irons, so the dot is it. Even then, I have to use the lowest power possible while still being able to see the dot in order to keep it from blurring.

This may be as good as I can do, but the gun can likely get to 2 MOA with better eyes, rest, ammo....

In any event, it will work fine at the 80 or so yards I normally take pigs.

Additionally, it is comforting to have it next to the bed with that 638 lumen Streamlight, and the aforementioned Aimpoint. It is short, handy, and for me an ideal CQB option.

Two major reasons are poorly trained users and inexpensive ammo. Mine is set to go but it was struggle to find quality ammo. The best I found was Remington Soft points, S&B, PMC, American Eagle and WB Winchester. From that batch I would expect Remington and American Eagle to produce tightest clusters. I'm guessing it isn't going to be ubiquitous TulAmmo. When I have time I will go to 100+m range to see how the gun performs. It will be a while but well worth the wait. The one close to me is indoor 23m which is too short a distance to play at.

I agree with taliv on the expectations.

The biggest issue I see with AKs is heat. As they start to warm up the point of impact really starts to change because of all the points of contact on the barrel.

For the longest time, the American manufacturers were shoving .308 bullets into 7.63x39 cases, resulting in horrible accuracy out of AK bores that actually measured .311. The bullets were just too loose in the bores for superior accuracy to be realized. On the other hand, I've read of Mini 30 rifles that actually had .308 diameter bores that loved the stuff.

FWIW, I have not paid any attention lately to the US makers in regards to this caliber. For all I know, they might now be using the correct bullets in these loadings.

If you cannot shoot better than 3 or 4 moa then ak accuracy is not a problem. The way I look at accuracy is this. When I am hunting and have to make a 180 yd shot offhand the 3 to 4 inch range on the rifle becomes 5 to 7 inches at 180 yds. Add that to wiggle because of offhand position and maybe out of breath...pretty soon I am missing the sweet spot by over 12 inches. An accurate bolt rifle keeps me closer to the 6 inch circle.

My Saiga went from an 8 minute to a 4 min rifle with the conversion, using a Tapco G2 trigger group. I'm sure it could have done better, I never really bothered trying. It was just a "cheap" beater/truck/truck/woods gun.
