It is critical that we all contact our local legislators immediately ...

Last week, Senate Bill 541 was introduced by State Senator Rodger Smitherman (D-18). SB541 would require all handgun ammunition manufactured or sold in Alabama to be encoded with a serial number, and entered into a statewide database at the time of sale. Encoded ammunition would be registered to the purchaser and would include the date of transaction, the purchaser’s name, date of birth, driver’s license number, and the serial number of the ammunition. All unserialized ammunition would have to be forfeited. Not only would this measure cause enormous increases in the cost of ammunition, but it could lead to the establishment of a database of ammunition purchaser and ultimately the cessation of the sale of ammunition in Alabama.

Even if the industry can or will produce this ammunition exclusively for Alabama, the consumers will be required to register ammunition purchases and then blindly trust that the number etched on the "base of the bullet projectile" is accurately represented on the box in which it is sold. Since the "base of the bullet projectile" is necessarily obscured by the cartridge case, it is impossible for the consumer to know if he or she has accurately "registered" their purchase.

SB541 poses a serious threat to our Right to Keep and Bear Arms and needs to be stopped immediately.
Here is my email:
I would like to share with you my strong opposition to SB541, which would require all new ammunition to be encoded with a serial number. This would eventually cause ammunition manufacturers to cease sales within the state of Alabama. It would cause a direct violation of both our Second Amendment rights and the right to bear arms in the constitution of Alabama. Anti-gunners have realized that they can't strip us of our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms so they seek to ban ammunition. The right to keep and bear arms implies that ammunition must also be available or it does no good. Please show your opposition to this bill and spread that word that the residents of Alabama do not vote anti-gun. Thank you for your support.

ARGH! I can't believe we're dumb enough to do this here in Dixie!!!!!! I thought this cr@p was reserved for Commie pinko states like Joisey and Kommiefornya.
Oh well, I sent a letter -- a nice one, not one with vindictives like used here.

Vindictive or not, they need to think twice before they try to pass this crap here. Like you said, this isn't freaking Jersey or California - voters won't stand for this here. Legislators that don't understand this will end up without a job next election.

All politics is local. Probably whichever pol introducing such things it plays well with his district. I can just imagine which part of Alabama and what demographics he represents. Pretty certain it isn't Enterprise or Dolthan.

I think his district is intercity Montgomery. I think he probably introduced this bill as a bargaining chip against some of the good second amendment legislation that was introduced.

I think this is ridiculous, my letter will go out first thing Monday morning, an email here in just a minute! How stupid do people have to be these days? I have my own opinions on individuals such as this, but I will keep them to myself...ridiculous! Thanks for the heads up!

Here is the website for looking up your officials in your area...

Hey rocinante, although I live in Wyoming now, I grew up in Enterprise. my folks and family still live there. And you're right. As far as I can tell, this kind of BS won't stand in the Wiregrass area!!!!!!!!!! Who the hell would have thought this could even see the light of day in the "Heart of Dixie"????? Go Wildcats!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAR EAGLE:D

I think you AL guys can beat it if you just show up and 'splain the facts.

We did just that in CT (on both ammo serialization AND microstamping). And we beat it (for not).

If CT can do it, so can Alabama.

But now is the time to speak up and educate - by no means be complacent.

Nearly all states in the U.S. have at least one urban area that is much like any other urban area in the U.S. You can expect a microstamping/serialization campaign from the legislators in those areas every year.

HOLLY reloading nightmare!!!
What are they going to do with people who reload ammo? make it illegal too....

They want to make reloading illegal, and the gun-grabbers also want to make ammunition so expensive and difficult to obtain that our guns will be nothing more than high priced clubs. These people are evil. They want us disarmed, and, if they can't outlaw civilian gun ownership, then they will try to make it so onerous that nobody will bother.

We need to ask them what they want to do to the American people that makes them so anxious for us to be unarmed and helpless.

Now THAT is an excellent question.

I wonder if this is the start of 'Round 2'. A few months ago, a series of these bills popped up in several states pretty much simultaneously. I *think* they all failed. Is this the start of a new barrage in a different set of states?

Ammunitionaccountability.org is the group pushing this IIRC.
