BOGOTA, Colombia -- A Colombian man who tried to startle his nephew from a bout of the hiccups by pointing a gun at him accidentally pulled the trigger and killed him.

Police in the northern city of Barranquilla said the distraught uncle then ran out of the house and down the street a few yards before stopping and shooting himself. He died from a gunshot wound in the head.

According to police, the incident occurred Sunday night after the two men had been drinking.

Sounds like it stopped the hiccups. Some people will never learn. Sorry to be flippant, but I'm tired of reading these sad and sooo easily prevented stories. My father-in-law ALWAYS leaves his guns loaded. I like the idea that you never wonder if it's loaded or not. They are always loaded, period (unless broken down for cleaning.) Treat them with respect!!!

Dito on treat them as if they are loaded and on the always loaded parts lol. An unloaded gun isn't much more than a 1000 buck hammer.

I was mixing alcohol and guns the other day.

I had to use alcohol to clean the threads out on my Marlin so the loctite would stick :D

Accidentally pulled the trigger and killed him?

Accidentally?? :fire:

I cannot stand things like this. Who points guns at people to scare them? It just shocks me that this goes on, especially with all of the incidents, fiction, non fiction, or otherwise, we've seen throughout the years where someone pointed a gun at another person as a joke and accidentally pulled the trigger.

And though my name is Tequila Sauer, I never drink and handle my firearm, even in pictures where I have a pistol and a glass of tequila together, I didn't drink it until the gun was stowed.

I'm pretty dumb, but not THAT dumb. :banghead:

If the alcohol comes out (even a single beer) the guns get locked away. I'm a pretty bright reasonable guy but booze stupids everybody.

People keep telling me that Guns and Alsohol don't mix.

I keep telling them that they must not have the right hardware.

I'll keep my pistol on my hip if I'm having 1 or 2 drinks at home.

More than 2, or anytime drinking outside my home, it gets locked up (the Mossberg 500A stays in the corner where it always is unless kids are around, and no, I don't "play" with it, drunk or sober  ).

I believe "Idiots and guns..." is a more appropriate thread title.

Blaming the alcohol is like blaming the gun.
Well said.

Now THERE is a sure fired way to get rid of the hiccups...

Paging Darwin
As Darwin .... no-doubt would say .... [this] "S**t Happens". Hope that bottle of Tequila survived.

Well, that's going a little far for me. If I'm having 1 or 2 drinks at home, the guns don't get locked up. Never have, never will. I don't take them out of the house, but that's because it's illegal. Bottom line for me is the law should be the same for carrying as it is for driving. Since it's not, they stay at home.

Homeowner to miscreant: Can you please go away and break in here another time when I haven't been drinking?
