All metal hammer fired .40 cals...what's the best?

I carry a poly gun for everyday carry and a small frame revolver when I can't dress around it, but I want another gun for a variety of other uses. I want something that's comfortable, accurate, and safe for off body carry on a dirt bike, in a truck, etc. I am also trying to stay around $700 or less, and affordability is tantamount with ammo costs these days. It must be a .40, because I love the round and reload for it. The gun can also be an alloy, just not a poly.

So far, the CZ 75 is on my radar, but nothing much else. Recommendations please!

I really like 3rd generation S&W autos.

A 4006 or something in an alloy like the 4003, etc. may be just the ticket. As LEO trade-ins, many S&W's are quite available for sub $400 in great condition. You'll find them in DA/SA and DAO versions, with a magazine safety that can be removed if you like. They will likely be found with dim night sights than can be replaced for less than fill retail.

The CZ75, SIG and S&W 4006 and its variants came most immediately to mind.

Since the CZ was mentioned already, I would also toss out the Beretta and Taurus 100-series pistols.

I'll toss out the Stoeger Cougar in .40. I never handled one of Stoeger make, but the Beretta ones were excellent, and as I understand it, they're essentially the metal framed version of the PX4s.

For $700 you should be able to get a used Sig P226 ST or other P226 with stainless frame. Best .40 I've ever shot.

Negative, though they do use a similiar locking system. Think short-barreled 92/96 with the neat rotating barrel lockup and without the open slide.

I would suggest the CZ 40B as well as the 75B.

If the cost is a serious issue, it wouldn't hurt to look into the Bersa Thunder. If I'm not mistaken, SOG still offer these at $300. I've never handled a Bersa other than one of their .380s, but I've done ample research as I was in the market for a Bersa UC9 (and purchased one yesterday on AuctionArms.com). Apparently, Bersas have a solid reputation for being well designed (close to a Walther M88), well made and reliable.
The frames are made of an alloy and not ordnance steel, though they are said to be tough as nails.

Just an option if you're looking for a quality firearm "for cheap".
