What would you all think of the 5.7x28 as a self defense, bug-out, and hunting round?

You can carry a 30 round magazine in a pistol. The cartridge is accurate out to 150 yards.
Given a survival mode it could be used to hunt all but the largest game. It comes available in the pistols of 3 different manufacturers. If you had to use only ONE gun might not this be the choice?

5.7x28 seems like too niche of a cartridge to me. You can walk into any gun shop and find 9mm ammo. You can find 9mm ammo out there that supposedly gets 2000 FPS with a 50 grain bullet. I can reload 105 grain lead SWC rounds that run 1400 with wiggle room to increase that charge.

5.7x28 could work for you. It just doesn't seem like the most logical choice to me. I prefer rounds I can cast and reload for with ease.

My vote goes to 41 mag. Pistol and carbine. Or just the pistol. Powerful enough for black bear. Good stopping power for two legged creatures. But hard to find ammo for it. So if you don’t reload. It’s not a good choice.

If I could only have one gun for everything I would want a lot more than ~ 380 ft/lb of energy.

If I was “bugging out” with a firearm, I would also pick a much more popular cartridge, to increase my chances of being able to feed it.

An AK pistol would be nice. Ammo selection for hunting and other duties, plus, I would not have to clean it as often.
I know people will say: "Well, the sight radius would make it impossible to hit anything".
And I will say: "Well, that is what scopes are for!"
To me, the 5.7 has a purpose, but since animals would not wear body armor (at least to the best of my knowledge), I do not see a practical use for its body-armor piercing value. If pure survival mode is the scenario, a .22LR is much more well suited. But then again, what I know of survival is what I see everyday! On TV!
I would say "Bring the biggest gun and ammo you can lug around for extended periods of time".

Yes, the 5.7 is too niche a cartridge. Seems to me if you have to "bug out" you had better bring your own ammo with you. It's hard enough to find even 22 at present.
My choice, 44 Magnum, lever action and revolver. Can take deer sized game, pretty effective on 2 legged predators.

I think a 223 in a 7.5” barrel pistol with a 10, 20 or 30 round mag would be much better for all 3 purposes.

Agreed, a 10.5” 556 pistol with a RDS and a suppressor. Throw a CMMG 22LR conversion kit in the bag with a single 10rd magazine for small game and you got yourself a very adaptable system. Have some MagPul BUIS sighted in for the 22LR.

I have a Marlin 1894s and smith 657 mountain gun in this caliber. Good choice, but .41 mag lever guns are pretty rare. A 10mm Carbine and Pistol would also make for a good pair.

I had a 41 mag BH for a while, but
couldn't see keeping it since I was
already tooled up for 44 and couldn't
see the 41 covering bases that weren't
already covered by the 44
Nothing wrong with it though

Not sure I buy into the general premise. I am never going to be doing all three of those things at the same time. Thankfully I am not in a situation that forces me to just one gun choice. Variety is the spice of life and I change guns almost as often as I can aford. Anything I hunt with will do a passable job at self defense too. A self defense specific firearm implies CCW to me so that is going to be a handgun in some common caliber (40S&w and 38 Special my two favorite etc). Bugout is something I don't see happening in all but the most vanishing weird and unlikely circumstance and in that case my first choice is going to be a 22LR or 410.

Thanks for the replies all. Some of you are putting up rifle/pistol combos. Nice, but I was think ONE gun to do out all.

If you could only have ONE firearm, then I think my choice would be an AR pistol or SBR in 300 BLK. Between Supersonic, Subsonic and silencer can options, I think this firearm would give you the most options to cover all your bases.

Prices on the ammo have also come down to the level, where it is less expensive to shoot than 5.7. also alot more power for hunting loads ( Supersonic ) than the 5.7.

Use case scenario matters here. I can say in almost every situation where I may need to depend on that firearm, I’d rather have a rifle configuration gun.

If we’re talking “Hatchet” or “Desert island” type scenario, where you’re essentially marooned in the wilderness with what you happened to have on you, I guess maybe a carbine in 5.7 (not sure if such a beast exists) would make sense: you’re not getting resupplied ‘til rescued so esoteric specialized ammo matters not. You’ll have a supply with your gun. I might prefer .22lr though, because in the space required for a brick of ammo I could probably fit far fewer rounds of any centerfire cartridge.

If I’m bugging out due to, let’s say, natural disaster with resultant social chaos, I may have to fight more than just a fierce beast once or twice, and so I want something with more readily obtainable ammo. I’d take an AR-15 in the usual chambering. Also probably vastly more effective if I really do need to fight. Ammo is lightweight by centerfire rifle standards.

I wouldn’t want to depend on any pistol for hunting and I wouldn’t want to depend on any pistol for self defense outside of a populated area where the rule of law applies. So if I’m in a city and it’s that dangerous I’ll procure a pistol somehow. Not much game running around on East 2nd St. anyway. I’d want it chambered in something more conventional like 9mm though.

This cartridge, fired from a handgun, is roughly the ballistic equivalent of the 22 WMR fired from a rifle.

I don't think anyone, anywhere would seriously consider either much good for anything but small game over 50 yds. or so.

A 10mm Glock? :D My 137 year old '73 Winchester chambered in 38 WCF loaded with black powder loads is slightly more powerful (192 gr. hard cast FP @ 1400+ fps) than a 10mm fired from a handgun. No one at any time has considered a 38 WCF as much of a hunting round.

That 5.7 is another marketing gimmick imo. .357 mag or .44 mag 6 inch pistol and carbine combination will do just fine. You wont make it on just one or the other firearm. SBRs not in my survival arsenal. Spraying and praying with limited ammo supply won't cut it. To each his own though.
