I missed the beginning, but in my insomnia last night I was flipping through the channels and landed on CNN Headline News while they were doing a piece on the AWB expiring. There was a lady on the phone from the Christian Science Monitor I believe and the anchor was asking her questions. She was saying that after 10 years the ban would be expiring even though nearly two thirds of the public supported it, but because there is a very vocal minority. Then the anchor asked if that was the NRA and she said yes we'll get to that. He then asked if there was any chance of the ban being renewed and she said "no not at all it's going to expire." The anchor then asked her "So who could this end up hurting more President Bush or John Kerry?" She replied "well it actually could hurt Kerry more as the Democrats have been hurt badly in recent years by going to far left on the gun issue." "In 2000 Al Gore lost 5 states including his home state because he was for restrictions on handguns, and licensing." "The Democrats have been trying to come back from the far left on the issue, in fact the party platform for the first time mentions a 2nd Amendment right to own a gun, and Kerry is a hunter and a gun owner himself, however if he's seen as pushing too hard to renew this ban it could definately wake up the NRA." She went on to say that some people rumor the NRA to be withholding their presidential endorsement until the ban is dead, but the NRA denies it. Then when asked "will we be revisiting this next year?" she response "no I highly doubt it, unless there is some terrible crime committed with an assault weapon that could cause a massive outcry the issue is over."

On CNN no less!! :what:

I think on a personal/grassroots level you are seeing number of things:

- people don't like being scammed and the AWB is a scam

- being a politically correct drone is not as good a thing as it used to be.

The pendulum swings the other way . . . . .

unless there is some terrible crime committed with an assault weapon that could cause a massive outcry the issue is over

Does anyone else share my feeling that someone will wait until the ban is sunset, to go on a shooting spree?

The Monitor is in my opinion a very balanced newspaper - it's rare that they print emotionally charged articles like Fox or CNN do.
