I got this from www.awbansunset.com

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/06/28/MNGQK7D4RU1.DTL

Sounds like Feinstein has essentially given up all hope of getting the ban renewed before it expires, saying she is "looking toward November's elections to produce a president and a House leadership more supportive of gun control."

The article then goes on to say...

For Bush, the fading chances that the ban renewal will reach his desk is good news, said Richard Feldman, a lobbyist for gun manufacturers.

"It would be close to his political death if he signed it before the election,'' he said, because gun rights supporters would take it out on him at the polls, probably by staying away rather than voting for Bush's Democratic opponent, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, who voted for the ban's renewal.

"Come January, it's a different story. Then, if he's re-elected, he'd be forced to sign the bill, if he gets a clean one that just contains an extension of the existing law,'' Feldman said.

...if he's re-elected, he'd be forced to sign the bill, if he gets a clean one that just contains an extension of the existing law...

I don't particularly buy this. For one thing if he was all that enthused about renewing the ban it would be done now. Secondly that scenario would be literally impossible to unfold since if the ban is not renewed after the election there would be no more "current law". It would serve Bush no good whatsoever, other than getting the Republican Congress in trouble with it's base, to sign a new AWB.

You want to vote Libertarian this November go ahead. But first take a trip out here to the sunny PRK and get a feel for what it's like when the Democratic Party rules the earth. Make no mistake a vote for anybody other than George Bush this year is a vote for John Kerry.

quote:

That's all too credible, and all too good a reason to vote Libertarian.

Come January, if Bush is in office, he's term limited with no reason to play footsie with antis anymore.

The SF Chronicle says Bush would be forced to sign a new AWB and you take that as gospel truth, eh?

I missed the part about copkillersprayfireshootsthroughschoolsforthechildren...since it is from the Chronicle, after all.

Problem is, after November he's got no reason to play footsy with US, either. And you might recall he campaigned on renewing the AWB, only shutting up about it, (Never actually repudiating the position.) after the election returns made it obvious how much he needed our votes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Kerry at least aspires to be worse, but Bush is NOT our friend. And depending on him to act like he is, one microsecond longer than he needs our votes, is a good way to get more gun control on the books.

The President can only sign what Congress puts before him. Vote however you want for POTUS. Seriously consider your vote for Congress or the Senate. A demo controlled Congress or a repub... hmmmm...

Problem is, after November he's got no reason to play footsy with US, either.

...well, other than the fact that he'd like to see his successor be a Republican, too.

One of the main reasons that Gore lost was because Clinton POed too many people. Personally, I don't envision Dubya leaving Condoleezza in a similar situation. :D

We will enjoy at least a temporary reprieve and be able to install evil features on our guns and buy regular magazines. Prices probably won't drop because there will be fear of a new President & Congress that could be (hopefully not) more amenable to Diane's brand of public safety. :barf:

That's nice...

now just sit down, relax, pop the can, hit the TV for Field & Stream on Outdoors, lay back, forget it, it's done, finish, gone. Tomorrow order some Uzi's and AK's and 500-round mags, and some tactical gear on lay-away till 9/14. Tell your FFL you'll see him/her then.

Yeah, right!

Go to sleep on this and Sept 14 will have another ten years... or worse.

Situational awareness applies to politics too. Hey, that's good, huh? It's MINE, darn it.

Off I go to put it on my sig.

Stay alert - t'ain't over till the ... well, you know what it is.

similar article but different text.

check the last paragraph, vowes to go at it next year! (she's hoping in partnership with Kerry i bet!

Feinstein Battles to Renew Gun Ban

Posted: June 29, 2004 at 3:45 p.m.
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) -- U.S. Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer held a joint news conference in San Francisco Tuesday morning to call attention to the struggle to renew Feinstein's federal assault weapons ban, which is set to expire Sept. 13.

The ban was Feinstein's response to the tragedy that occurred 11 years ago this week in which a man opened fire with an assault weapon at 101 California St., killing eight people and injuring six.

It was signed into law 10 years ago by former President Bill Clinton as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, but Feinstein said today prospects for its renewal are bleak.

"The president of the Unites States has said he will sign this legislation if it reaches his desk," she said.

However, while the ban has 52 votes in its favor in the Senate, it is unlikely to pass in the House of Representatives, Feinstein said.

Feinstein and Boxer were flanked by Steve Sposato and Carol Kingsley, who lost their spouses in the 101 California St. incident. Boxer said one of her son's best friends was also killed in the assault.

Sposato held up one of four assault weapons on display at the news conference, saying that a similar weapon claimed the life of his wife, Judy Jones Sposato, leaving his daughter Megan, now 11, without a mother.

Kingsley, whose husband Jack Berman was killed, urged California residents to ask their friends and family in other states to persuade their legislators to support renewal of the ban.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom weighed in as well, saying that seven of the more than 50 people murdered in San Francisco this year have been killed by bullets from assault weapons, including San Francisco police Officer Isaac Espinosa, who was fatally shot with an AK-47 in the city's Bayview District in April.

"These truly are weapons of choice for these young men who are out there on the streets doing these killings," Newsom said.

San Francisco Police Chief Heather Fong said police have confiscated three assault weapons in the past 10 days alone.

Boxer said that since the assault weapons ban was passed a decade ago, assault weapon use has decreased by 45 percent.

Feinstein said the ban has resulted a two-thirds decrease in the numbers of shootings using assault weapons. She also said that "by every poll" three-quarters of Americans support the assault weapon ban, as do 60 percent of gun-owning families.

National Rifle Association spokeswoman Kelly Hobbs, however, said statistics given by supporters of the renewal should be taken with a grain of salt.

"The difference between 2004 and 1994 is that most Americans understand banning these firearms has no effect on crime," Hobbs said.

Hobbs cited a 1997 study by the Urban Institute, commissioned in part by the U.S. Department of Justice, as one indication that the ban was ineffective.

The study, which only took into account one year of post-ban data, showed a slight drop in gun murders, but did not conclusively prove that the drop was attributable to the assault weapon ban.

Hobbs claimed that it is the criminals, not the assault weapons, that are the problem behind violent crime and that law-abiding gun owners use assault weapons for legitimate purposes including sports and target shooting.

The fate of the ban, she said, is "an extremely important issue to our 4 million members," she said.

Feinstein accused the gun lobby, which she called "very powerful," of using its political clout to sway legislators.

If the ban is not renewed, Feinstein said she would spend next year fighting to pass a new ban similar to the original. "We'll launch a nationwide effort to get it passed," she said.

She could not use fear, uncertainty, and doubt if she went at it next year. If we win now I think we will win for good unless the political climate really changes.

God willing, we'll be able to throw Barbara Boxer out of office this November, and let Dianne Feinstein know her days are numbered, too. This is one of those situations where, no matter how disillusioned I was with the process, I'll make sure to take time to go and vote for whomever is running against Boxer. Anyone would be preferable. What's that? The Republican nominee is a drunken bum hauled out of the gutter, hosed off, and propped up? No problem... he isn't Boxer, so he's got my vote.

That was in today's edition. (Not kidding.)

Isn't that great? To hell with logic and to hell with your kids' safety and to hell with even trying to prevent moron gangbangers and terrorist wanna-bes and imbecilic white supremacists from easily getting their hands on a nice AK-47 that can mow down a schoolyard full of tots in 10 seconds flat. Instead: Down with liberal scum who would take away our God-given right to bear nasty ultraviolent weaponry that no one anywhere can justify the existence of. Go, NRA!

Well, now...

talking to the choir, is he?
Oh, and also by upstanding, white-bread NRA members.
Is this a race thing from left field?

Tell you, if I ever want a massive rant, I might ask him to write it... this IS a rant and a half, for sure.

Come Sept 14, I hope that I can say "Tough luck, Jack!"

A comment on Mark Morford: Is there such a thing as a "heterophobe"?

Seems to really have a thing against straight gun owners, as at least once every paragraph he makes reference to gun owners or NRA members being homophobes or have a "secret stash of gay porn".

Probably the best thing that we gun owners can do is put Dr. Tom Coburn in office.

Why?

Because he will filibuster ANY anti-second amendment legislation that will come through the Senate. This dude managed to do something similar in the House, which is nearly impossible. He pissed off the House leadership pretty bad, but he didn't care. He retired after 3 terms like he promised, and now he's the GOP nominee for US Senator from Oklahoma. I hope he is elected. Despite his views on other issues, he would be no different than the man he's replacing, and like former NH Senator Bob Smith, he would tell Frist to shove it if it's against RKBA interests.

Yeah there is.

...if he's re-elected, he'd be forced to sign the bill, if he gets a clean one that just contains an extension of the existing law...

Wrong ... after September 14th there will be no "existing law" to extend and that is BEFORE the election.

They will have to write a new one.

Exactly he only promised to sign a renewal, he didn't say anything about a new law. I don't understand why pro-gun people are upset by this, he knew he wouldn't get sent a renewal, so he could take the issue away from the Dem's by saying he would sign it while knowing the GOP congress would make sure he never had to follow through on it.

That's all too credible, and all too good a reason to vote Libertarian.

Don't get it? Why would he be forced to after the election? His debts are owed to gun owners and he's untouchable by the anti-rights zealots. And why would this be a reason to vote Lib? There's no logical connection between the two even if Bush would support new legislation.

If kerry gets elected maybe we'll get lucky and he'll insult the Secret Service into inefficiency. You can tell alot about people by the way they treat the people serving them, be they waiters or secret service. :barf:
