I'm sure many of us know that Altamont has been providing grips to S&W for a while now, and noticed when I attempted to order a pair of J frame grips, that the "button" for add medallions was missing. I had ordered a similar pair before in another wood, and was able to add S&W medallions, but not now. A quick call to Altamont revealed that they are out of medallions and are waiting for S&W to ship them stock.

Soooo, if you're anxious to buy grips with medallions, you may want to wait a bit until they're available.

Just a public service message from this newbee.

You indicate that you have gotten the Altamont Gun Grips before. I just went to their website and they look real nice and I like their prices, but I have never heard of them before. How are they on fit and quality? I'm looking for grips for a J and N frame.

You will not be disappointed. Altamont has been providing grips for S&W as well as Colt for some time now. While they are not the sole source of grips for S&W, they have been called upon to provide special grips when needed. They make the S&W Heritage solid walnut grips, for example, which are not the laminated "dymondwood".

Another grip source you may look at are www.handgungrips.com which carry the "gator back" grips that Talo models are noted for. Their prices are higher, though I don't know why, and they have a larger selection.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention another place where one can get real solid walnut grips for your S&W's. Currently, they too have run out of medallions, so are laser engraving the S&W logo....

These grips will have the medallion option available sometime next year.

I wish I could say something good about Altamont but I can't. I bought a set of round to square butt rosewood grips for my model S&W 686 and they leave a gap at the bottom of the grip. I contacted Alatamont and they told me that there is a gap on those grips because of the conversion. Told me to get round butt grips so there would be no gap. I bought them specifically to convert them to square. Now I will end up spending the initial $9.00 shipping plus whatever the shipping to return them amounts to. So I will be spending between $16.00 and $20.00 for grips I won't have. Can't say anything good about that company unfortunately.

I tried to go with the Altamont grips, but didn't have much luck. I could never get past the "with or without medallions" option to place an order. Called and was told there was no one there to take an order because they were all at a gun show. Left a message and never got a call back. I have to consider them flakes.

I did buy a set of imitation ivory grips for my S&W Model 29 from handgungrips.com. Received them in a few days. They look great and are a perfect fit. I would very highly recommend them.

I ordered grips from Altamont for my MK III Ruger and I could not have ask for a better fit
and quality

Altamont SUCKS Imo... Horrible customer service, Charged my credit card 3 times, Took forever to send them ... Had to break out the dremel to make them fit right...

I bought a set of ivories for my New Vaquero and a set of rosewood for the j-frame. For the price I would say they are an excellent bargain. Not custom by any means but a great way to dress up an old gun.
