Am I paranoid?

I had a very bad experience many years ago which was my fault in that I didn't check to see who was on the other side of the door before opening it. I was expecting someone and got caught completely unprepared by an armed BG. Doesn't sound to me like you're paranoid at all, but I agree with everyone else who mentioned loading one in the chamber.

You handled it well. You are not paranoid. You need your CCW permit and "Face down range, load and make ready!". Charge the round in the chamber, holster your firearm and be ready. Glad you are safe, could have turned out a lot worse.

If you're not paranoid, then you're not paying attention. So, yes. For good reason. Stay safe.

Ridiculous!!!

There is a big difference between awareness and paranoia.

The fact that we have a "doc" on this forum claiming otherwise is "SCARY"

In case you didn't read the post that you are quoting and commenting on, the suggestion was to communicate through the closed door

Read it word for word and understood it perfectly

If I have no intention of answering the door there's no reason to communicate through the door.

Assessing whether a stranger knocking on your door is a threat or not depends on a whole variety of factors.

I've never met a stranger at my door that wasn't a threat, to my privacy

If you're not comfortable having a HD/SD auto chambered, an auto is not a good HD/SD choice for you. I'm not bashing, just pointing out that high stress situations are not the time to subject yourself to a speed and dexterity test before you can defend yourself.

When that happens to me I like to sneak out the back door with a flashlight and come around to the front and pump the shotgun.

Sounds dangerous doesn't it? Don't worry, I had one in the chamber before I pumped it.

I sure hope that wasn't a cop.

That would be fantastic if this was a thread dedicated to privacy.

Rockwell,
OP's question was about self-defense and personal safety, not privacy. You are OFF TOPIC!

Excuse me? Didn't you just pump a round out onto the ground?

Maybe your not catching this but if I don't answer the door or communicate through the door I shouldn't be stuck in the position of having to defend myself at the door.

rugerman07: No, your not paranoid, I'd have done the same thing in your situation.

Um, rugerman07?

Which is it? Your response to the OP's actions....or your signature?

Just wonderin'.....:p

Or you could switch to a good quality DA revolver. For the house, a 4" .357 magnum SW M19 loaded with Federal 125gr JHPs.

That way you can be loaded and comfortable.

I know I'm a foreigner and all but ... reading through some of these types of thread I can't help but feel that if you're all living in this constant state of alert / dread then you're kind of jumpy and your quality of life is suffering. I'd have a chain on my door but I don't think I'd be reaching for a gun just because someone I didn't recognize knocked on my door. If it seemed a bit iffy or I couldn't be arsed I'd just not bother to answer the door. Pulse rate normal.

I have two loaded guns on me every waking hour of my life. Pulse rate normal. I've never had to use them, and probably won't, but I like to carry them because I can, and I realize that bad guys don't organize their work schedule around my convenience. Pulse rate normal.

I would say you are absolutely paranoid... that is of course of your definition of paranoid is cautiously aware of your situation.. not sure I would have kept the chamber empty though... carrying that way is one thing, walking to the front door with a stranger on the other side is completely different...
