I'll also pile on with the rule that you open up the action whenever handing a gun to someone.

Notable exception is a gunshow, where there is no safe direction and the guns are cable tied.

even then, a person can, and should, do everything possible to avoid letting the muzzle sweep across others. just takes an extra second of careful thought as to how to pick it up.

I feel guilty every time I touch a gun at a gun show. They're always sitting on the table pointed at somebody across the room.

I have no qualms about jumping out of the way and going wide-eyed when somebody at the gun shop points one at me. I've never had to say anything.
