I went to a movie, the other night. At an AMC theater here in Minnesota.

A year or so ago AMC started posting little no-guns decals in the doors. No words, just the circle-slash-gun. Not even close to complying with Minnesota's statutory language.

Last night, I saw that they'd changed their signs to be compliant with statute in all respects save for size. (Signs were maybe 6x8, instead of 11x17.)

Now when you see a non-compliant sign, there's always the question of whether they intend to be compliant, or whether they are intentionally non-compliant. Whether they want to keep permit-holders out, or whether they simply want the gun-fearing-weanies to feel all warm and toasty.

AMC, though, seems to have clearly indicated that they don't want gun-owners business.

Easy explaination

They are covering themselves to help prevent lawsuits in case of a shooting.
Blame the laywers. Make sure you do not see any "signs" when you enter the theater.

Well the AMC by me here in Ft Worth isn't posted at all so it must not be a corporate wide thing anyway.

Here in Florida the AMC theatres don't have any, was at one last night and didn't see any signs. I'll always tense up when I see the police officer at the ticket collectors. I always put my hand over my snubby to keep from printing. Must be a yankee thing.

It might be better not to do this. It is better to print and show comfortable and reassured body language than to cringe and cover up.

I haven't heard of a movie in the last several years worth spending my money on anyway. in Kearney ccw's are illegal anyway so AMC doesn't have to post a sign

None here in AZ. I like to put up an opposing sign as a counterpoint.

The peter pipers piZza (Chucky Cheese) here no longer has signage due to the rest of the property being counter point posted...:neener:

Whenever you see this, Explain to the manager how you don't feel safe in a gun free zone. Explain that their sign is an advertisement to wrongdoers that this place if full of easy pickings. And explain that this sign is unnecessary, due to the fact that it's already illegal to pack a strap without a permit. A permit that is incredibly difficult to obtain.
If they say it's a corporate policy, contact the corporate office and inform them that they are opening themselves up to a lawsuit should a mass shooting occur under the protection of their "Gun free zone"

When I worked for AMC, I was prohibited from having a box cutter when working stock, because it's a weapon.

Screw 'em.

I used to work as a manager for a movie theater. It wasn't an AMC. I wasn't old enough to carry at the time so I didn't. But there were 3 other managers that were carrying at all times. Money deposits are done late at night and I always felt much safer with someone armed there.

I'm not a fan of the term "legal gun" because except for a few examples (like a gun with the s/n scratched off, or a converted full-auto with no papers, etc) a gun can't be illegal. It can only be illegal for the person to have it or carry it.

Remember it's the person, not the gun, that is the problem with crime.

Technical non-conformance of such signs doesn't concern me. I don't go where I'm not wanted. If they are willing to deny themselves the supreme pleasure of the delightetudinosity that is me, it's their loss.

Almost nothing in life that can be bought for money matters that much to me.

signs

That sign is why I don't go to there movie theater anymore. You have a right to put up your sign and I have a right to not go there and spend my money. Plus there over priced!

My understanding is that it is corporate. And you're lucky, the AMCs here in Houston are marked with 30.06 signs, although they fail compliance on a couple points.

The theater nearest to me is an AMC and almost the only theater in town that I go to (2-4 times a month). If they're not going to comply with the law, I have no problem ignoring their signs. If their signs DID meet 30.06 requirements, I'd probably follow the 'concealed is concealed' philosophy and ignore them anyway. The only thing that gives me the slightest pause is the knowledge that a violation could potentially cost me my license.

$10 a ticket and $3 a drink to sit in a noisy theater full of loud-mouthed imbeciles? No thanks, I'll stick to 52" HDTV and 5.1 surround sound at home.

The last 2 movies I went to (28 Weeks Later, Saw IV) were ruined by the other people in the theater.

I agree with the above. Every time I give the theater a "second chance", I get disappointed. Loud people talking through the whole movie, babies screaming in late-night R-rated movies, you name it. I have all but quit going. I enjoy my 50" HDTV with 5.1 much better.

Well, in MN the worst that can happen if management finds out your carrying and asks you to leave, if you do not leave the premises by the time the cops arrive, you'll get a misdemeanor trespass citation.

My understanding has been that they need to (1) find out you're carrying (2) ask you to leave and (3) you have to refuse to leave, before there's legal issues.

In NC, theaters are off-limits anyway since they require a paid admission.

As strat81 mentioned, though, we prefer staying at home. And, with a new baby, I'm sure that the people in the theater prefer we stay at home, too.

Cops are generally at AMC to help discourage the teen riff-raff from acting up, loitering, intimidating people, or getting in fights. They are NOT there to frisk respectable-looking adults for guns.

Someone pegged it- the sign is a CYA legal move in case some yahoo discharges through his seat or brandishes, then they can claim they "had a sign."

Those movies ruined themselves...
Saw IV - actually the entire franchise - is great. Incredibly gross and violent, but the insight into human nature is tremendous. 28 Weeks Later was okay... the first one was better.

I sat through Ghost Rider on Friday... absolutely terrible.

SAW is torture porn, plain and simple. It is moreso an insight into human nature by studying people who get enjoyment out of it.

Back to topic:

Tell the AMC higherups that 'I CAN'T READ!'

1) When you see a "no guns" sign, it doesn't matter if it is compliant to the letter of the law, or not. If it's hand scrawled on a post-it, that's good enough for me. Ain't goin' there. Ain't spendin' money there.

2) If you don't tell the management that you're not spending money there, they don't know. You have to let them know that you are going to their competition.
