Well another piece in my quest has been found.

On the way to me is a 6", 10mm, Springfield OMEGA.
I'm getting antsy so I went looking for ammo and all I can find in brass in my area is
American Eagle 180 grn Full Metal Jacket ($20.99 or $21.99 for a box of 50 IIRC). I
have no experience with this maker or even the 10mm in general. So I ask you these
questions....

Is American Eagle a good ammo manufacture?
Is their brass quality and reloadable?
Are there other manufactures that would be a better fit for a 6"?
Are there other weights that would be a better fit for a 6"?

This will mostly be a target and "fun gun" but any gun I have above a .22 must also be
able to be used as a defense option.

Thanks in advance for the information.

American Eagle is made by Federal. It is good practice/plinking ammo.

Yes.

Nope--not for practice and plinking. For carry, the 175-grain Winchester Silvertip is probably best way to go (though the Federal 180-grain Hydra-Shok is no slouch in that department). Without going into a lot a detail, I steer way clear of Double Tap (and it's strictly mail order anyway).

A 180-grain is optimal for the 10mm.

If you are asking if American Eagle (Federal) is reloadable, then you perhaps have the knowledge and equipment to handload your own practice/plinking ammo. Or you know and trust someone who can build you some good ammunition.

Good!

I enjoy shooting my own 10mm reloads a lot. So will you!

American Eagle is a boring underpowered load. Like a hot 40

Reload some ammo or get some Double Tap. Have real 10mm fun/.

I shoot a lot of Georgia arms. It was running 13.50/50 180gr at 1100fps.

I've shot a lot of AE through my Kimber. Haven't had any problems with it, though as everyone says it's only loaded to .40S&W levels (1030 fps, but the box says 1060). I haven't bought any in bulk off the web, but I know it's expensive as all get-out in the brick-n-mortar shops around here, something like $20-25 for a box of 50. I just jumped into the reloading pool, though, so no doubt my wallet will be thanking me before long. :D

I really like the high antimony lead AE 10mm ammo...I'm not sure if MiWall corp does shoes in TX but their 10mm loaded ammo is nice.....as the man above said, it's really a blast to shoot double tap. Have fun.

Thanks guys.

I will be reloading but I want to run some rnds through as soon as possible
so it seems the AE will work just fine. I know the OMEGAs can be problematic
so I won't be pushing it too hard. I'll do that to my next 10mm buy as replacement
parts for the OMEGA are hard to find.

defiant73a, what issues have you had with Double Tap?

AE ammo is fine for range use. Federal brass is ok but for 10MM I prefer Starline. You can get it for a pretty decent price thru www.midwayusa.com

When you start reloading for the 10MM, give Powerpistol, Blue Dot and 800X a try. 800X will push a 200gr pill with authority.

Enjoy.

I can't believe this thread has gone this far without someone mentioning Double Tap Ammo. "Full house" Norma spec loads.

On a side note, just checked Ammomans price on LC 62gr .223. $320/1000? And sold out? :what: Anyone remember when 62gr LC was going for $99/1000 and Wolf 55gr for $79/1000?

Weird opinions around here on DoubleTap. What is the point of 10mm if you don't take advantage of its power? You might as well pay a lot less for .40. DoubleTap merely loads their 10mm (and other ammo) to where it ought to be. They make quality ammunition - equivalent to Buffalo Bore, but at about half the cost.

180gr at 1100fps.

If this will make you happy why not just stay with the much more mainstream .40 S&W where factory ammo is 40-50% cheaper and for reloading you can pick up all the brass you'd want for free or nearly so.

I don't shoot my 10mm guns much because of the high cost of factory ammo and the fact that both guns launch the brass very far leading to high lossage rates in the weeds.
