anybody know if it's illegal to purchase ammo and/or guns after 10 pm in texas? I just tried to buy some wwb .40 s&w at walmart and got denied. because it was after 10. the clerk said it was against the law. never heard that before, but I've never tried it before either.

not sure about the law, but I was at the wally world in Fallon, NV and they wouldnt sell to me that late because they didnt want any of the late shift people getting in the firearms/ammo display case and selling stuff. Probably a fear that they will sell to someone who they arent supposed to and it will come back and haunt them.

just my opinion.

I wouldn't doubt it, last time I was in Texas I couldn't buy a beer after 10

Thats so funny you mentioned that...I was at Wal-mart tonight, and wandered over to the ammo section, only to look down at my watch and see it was 5 after 10:00.:)

Thats how it is in IN too.

I Stay out of Wal - Mart. Seems to me that it's a crime to buy any gun related items there, I was looking to buy a 550 pack of .22lr last year, and the lady called store security on me, because she said that nobody "needs" that much ammunition. In short the sale was denied, at 10:30 on a Sunday Morning.

There's not a federal law, but who knows about state and local law. There are stranger things on the books. Many "laws" clerks refer to are simply store policy.

Ive purchased ammo at a 24hr walmart at around 1am with no problems.

must be a state law or perhaps selectively enforced company policy.

I work in a Wal Mart. I've bought ammo at 1 AM. I've sold it at 11 PM.

The confusion probably comes from the very real fact the NICS system has set hours, and Wal Mart will not sell a gun when NICS is closed. Of course there could be some weird local law too.

That and Wal Mart employees are reflective of the general public. For every person like me in the general public there's 100 that don't know the simple facts about the legality of firearms, and the same ratio holds true in all industries including Wal Mart, law enforcement, nursing, etc.

For .22's? lol

Its dependant on the store, some will sell after ten, most wont.

Before a local walmart was closed because of a supercenter opening a few miles away, I got ammo several times after ten, despite the sign "no ammo or firearm sales from 10pm to 7am(?)" Just depended on who was working.

At the supercenter, they wont sell after ten, despite the fact that there is no sign saying so.

Ironic, huh? I find a little humor in it most of the time. The exception is when I get to the ammo counter around ten or when graveyard shift is running.

Its not a law in ohio but the wal mart wont sell ammo after 10pm. They tried to tell me it was a state law, and I just said "no it isnt." Then it went to " well, its store policy."

tried to buy a box of .22 bulk on saturday night... was after 10... and the assistant manager was back there... he called the lady with the key over and was going to sell to me, but she didnt have the key on her, and was gonna go get it... it was cool, i was planning on comming back to walmart the next morning anyways... so i told em not to bother

they did have a sign up about no ammo from the locked cases after 10... my guess, they dont wanna open the case fearing that someone might try to pull a robbery and steal a ton of ammo

if that's the case, couldn't the (armed) robber also simply demand that they open the ammo case?

i mean, once the threat of force is involved (a requirement for the crime of "robbery") does it really matter whether the robber demands both the ammo case key AND the ammo itself...?

if he's going to stick a gun in someone's face, does it really even matter whether the wal-mart is OPEN? couldn't he just force some security guard to let him in?

Same thing happened to me this weekend. The quite knowledgeable guy in sporting goods (rare to be sure) told me it's a Georgia law. They can't sell ammo between 10 PM and 8 AM...

Ive purchased ammo at a 24hr walmart at around 1am with no problems.

me too. 1,000 rounds of 9mm WWB (100 rd. party packs). practically cleaned them out. took a while to get someone to open the case and ring me up, but all they did was ask me for a d.l.

It's always fun to show up at a Wal-Mart for some WWB bulk packs at 9:30PM, wait around while paging the sporting goods folks for forty minutes, then get told to shove off 'cause they don't sell ammo after 10PM.

The things I'll do for good, cheap 9mm. :p

Sounds to me like a store policy. Could be they worry about late-night drunks or irate husbands or some such. I've certainly never heard of it as law, although it has never occurred to me to even think about buying ammo during late-night hours. But, 99% of my ammo is stuff I've reloaded myownself.

Liquor stores once were legally obligated to close at 10PM. The liquor lobby sought the change to the present 9PM closing time to reduce armed robberies.

You must've done something wrong then. Beer can be sold in Texas until 2AM in bars and until midnight in stores, except for Sat Night where you can buy it until 1AM. Unless you're in a dry county that sells no beer, and then you can still get a beer at a "private club" if you join, which usually costs less than the price of a beer.

Well that stinks if you hunt and were planning to go into the field early and realized you forgot to buy the right amount of ammo...

One time while buying AMMO AT WALMART HERE IN VA, they called a manager and had him escort me out of the store after my purchase. Once outside the store he handed me the box of.300 Ultra Mag.

I searched all the places I could find and I find no laws covering time restrictions on sales of guns or ammo so I guess it's just the store.

if that's the case, couldn't the (armed) robber also simply demand that they open the ammo case?

if the key to said ammo cases was not located on the store floor, that would make things very difficult...

They randomly stop selling ammo at night in the wally world around here. It's not a law, but I think they just don't hire people to run the sporting goods section 24/7. It's probably not worth staffing the counter to cater to one person wanting to buy ammo at 0300. My guess is that only certain people have the 'training' to staff it as well. The knowledge level of some of the people staffing varies widely. Sometimes the clerk will refuse to sell me .22LR or 9mm because I'm under 21. Other times they ask if it's for a rifle or pistol (it's for a rifle) and it's all fine...

Security being called for buying a bulk pack of .22. That's great. Did you ask "If that's too many cartridges for someone, why does it come packaged that way?"

I normally clean out the local Wal-Marts of .22LR ammo. I shoot alot of it. It's really annoying for the clerk too because the POS machine makes them scan and approve each box individually while constantly emitting an annoying beep.
