Ok i've got an odd question. I own 3 of those green army mil-surp ammo boxes and they are water tight. I keep all 3 of them empty for now in my room. Well every once in a while i will heard a loud *POP* come from one of them. This is a very loud noise, and has scared the snot out of many different people. Does anybody know why they do that (air temp? air pressure?) and if there are any ways of making them stop?

They pop because of air pressure change.

Mine do it a lot when the weather is going from a cold front to a warm or vis versa.

Or if i turn the heaters up or down a bit.

Any of these are followed by a wmmmmmmBUNK!! noice that usually makes me dive off my chair into a combat roll while unholstering my gun.

Kidding.

It is pretty loud though.

Woa, lookit that, my 1,007th post. Wonder when that happend.

I think just about any thin-walled container will pop with temp changes. The metal stresses to a certain point then *PANG*, snaps back to whatever position it was previously.

Your cans are haunted.

Mine were haunted, too. I exorcised the ghosts by taking the lids off and dropping them in the empty cans.

I'm pretty sure it's the air pressue. Mine used to pop whenever the sky's would start to cloud up - always a lot of fun at 4 AM.

It really scares dogs and cats. Especially when the cat is sleeping on the ammo dump. ;)

The ghosts cry out for ammo

The problem is they are empty! The ghosts of those who have gone before cry out for more ammo,.....feed them!

Yup, it's temp change.

I keep my ammo cans against an outside wall so the change is less noticeable. As proof of the theory on temp change, the house I grew up in had a "ghost" that would walk up the stairs at night and donw in the morning, but only in the winter. Temp change on old wooden steps.

:banghead:
I have wondered for quite some time what the occasional pop or bang sound was, could never really track it down and pinpoint it! I have sealed cans in two different bedroom closets and in my garage...have responded more than once in a tac ready state! LOL Read and learn...read and learn...

Ive got those ghosts in my room as well. Took me a while to figure out what they were. The plastic ammo boxes from cabelas dont pop, I think they are not air proof.

Remove anything volatile from them like cleaning solution.

I believe that you have answered your own question, I hear if you take the cans to the range more often they will quiet down.

Either that or air pressure, it has to be one of those.

Most materials expand when they get warmer, and contract when they get colder, metal cans can really make a noise when that happens, sometimes it's kinda loud!

Oh yeah...plus they are haunted! :what:

Sometimes just out of the corner of my eye I see a small dark shape dart about the room. I turn my head and look real quick, but by the time I do, it's gone. Sometimes I think they go into the fireplace, but I looked up there and didn't see anything. I figured they were ghosts. They don't seem to hurt anything, so I try to ignore them now. Maybe they are coming from my ammo cans. I think maybe I will throw out the cans.

Keep the cans.

And quit sniffing glue:neener:

Fill them with ammo and it won't happen. The ammo will displace most of the air, so there will not be as much for expansion.

Take a 2 litre plastic Coke container, fill it up with hot water, let it sit for 2 or 3 minutes, then pour the water out, and screw the cap back on tight.

another danger of the metal ammo cans in the same vein of things is overpressuration, when i was on active duty someone came up with the bright idea of putting fire extiguishers from our vehicles in the metal ammo cans to keep them from rolling around, well one started to leak and when one of the guys opened the can up, bam, took the top to the bottom of the chin, had to get a bunch of stitches. bled like a pig. thats why I keep my cans full of ammo, and other non expanding stuff (uh, wait, :scrutiny: never mind) ah yeah, metal flexing and all that.

You know...
I heard a strange noise in my apartment last week. I ended up grabbing my Mossberg and investigating. Found nothing but now I am wondering...
I keep my ammo in a .50 caliber can.
Hmmm....
