Any 12 ga ammo....

should work just fine in your Mossberg. It is not that expensive, pick up several brands and check it out in you gun.....I bet you will not notice any difference.....chris3

i like remington express buckshot and remington "gun club" bird and target loads. this is just general use stuff. more specific means require differant loads. im gunna get some managed recoil buckshot to keep around.

check out http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot20.htm for some results on differant buckshot loads outta a maverick 88 cylinder bore, same gun as a 500/590

I've always had very good results with the
remington managed/reduced recoil 00 buck.
My 500A with a 18.5" cylinder bore barrel
will keep this load in side of 10-12" at 35 ft.

I use Federal reduced recoil #4 buck indoors and move to Federal 3" 00 if I would have to use it outside. Past 20 yards with my 500 I had best just switch to slugs and make big holes in stuff.

You can take two identical shotguns with consecutive numbers off the assembly line, test them with any ammo, and find they "Like" different loads.

Shotgunning will always have a touch of the arcane.

Apples to apples, try some different loads of GOOD ammo and see what YOUR shotgun does best with.

A couple loads tested here recently that do well in my shotguns include "Old" Estate 00, Federal tactical 4 buck and the trusty standby Winchester 00 9 pellet.

Do stick to the 2 3/4" stuff. The 3" stuff doesn't do that much more at the target and slows down following shots due to longer recovery.

HTH....

The 590s the marine corps uses dont like anything but then most have been shot so much they need to be replaced. My personal 590 with hold a pattern tight enough to knock down a steel popper at 40 yards with hornady tap 8 pellet 00 buck.

one shot one kill

In my shotguns I have never really paid any attention to what brand I get all of the buckshot and slugs have all preformed the same so far. I have noticed remington and pmc shells hold up rather well compared to the rest, that is if you ever plan to reload your shells.

My boomstick primarily digests Wolf these days. Times are getting lean and I no problem paying the Russians (or is it ze Germans? I forget) for my lead. The stuff is cheap, it looks cool, and it patterns nicely.

When Dick's has ammo on sale I usually stock up on Remmington (what they carry) mostly because of price. Same deal: Cheap, works good, what's not to love?

For the row of nine shells (a full loading) I keep lined up below the sword rack on the mantle I use Winchester Super-X, because they have shiny brass bases and bright red hulls, and look exactly as the masses expect stereotypical shotgun shells to look.

Estate target loads handle the brunt of my screwing around. I have a polychoke installed just to be perverse (with a folding pistol grip stock, heat sheild, et. all...) so that ugly old gun can actually throw a trap load the way I want it.

I've patterned lots of buck brands in my 590 at several shotgun classes, but it likes Hornady TAP best, groups tight as a drum all the way out there...
