Ammo, It's Back!, Or Is It?

Its random and spotty around here. Sometimes in a blue moon wally world will get in a box of .45 or .223. Been a long time since I seen 9mm or .380 in local store. .40 is plentiful of course. Academy sports has some monarch brass 9mm the past couple times i was in there, plenty of .40, and some .44 mag. A few other things like bulk packs of .22, and some .223 was available at a marked up price.

Dicks never has .45 when I go in there, they got a lot of other stuff if you got the money. They did have a decent sell on shotgun ammo last week when I was in there. Buy 1 get 1 50% off limit 10(no birdshot or target loads). Bought 10 boxes of Brenneke K.O. slugs. Went out, came back in got the last 4 boxes of them and 2 boxes of 16 gauge 4 shot express loads.

A guy at my gun club got hold of some re-manufactured ball ammo .45acp from Georgia arms, and sold me 250 rds for 35 bucks. It appeared much more expensive on the website, but i'm hoping he can get hold of a lot more at that price.

EDIT: Can someone explain why there is such a surplus of .40?

Last Saturday, the Wal*Mart Supercenter in Levittown PA had Federal .40 JHPs and FMJs and nothing else in centerfire pistol ammo.

My local walmart did a re-model over the summer. I was excited when they opened up this fall. I went in to check out the new selection. Nothing...and not because they were sold out, they went liberal and no longer carry any sporting goods that can't be used at a city park. Not even any camping or fishing supplies...Sad, sad day...

Local Academy had an ad in Sunday's paper, Monarch steel case 55gr .223 $3.99/20 rounds limit 20 boxes.

Got 20 boxes yesterday at the store near work at lunch, got the last three boxes at the store I drive by on the way home. Went back to the store near work today at lunch and as I was starting to count out 20 boxes into my basket, the counterman came up and said: "want a case, we got plenty".

So I think it still depends strongly on location, these stores are about 20 miles apart.

bone dry here not even 22 ammo. When you do find it the price is crazy

I went to a gun show last weekend and saw plenty of ammo, EXCEPT, no 380! The last two times I went to Cabelas (Reno) there were full ammo shelves EXCEPT for 380. Cabelas had a few boxes of Buffalo Bore 90gr JHP and a few boxes of 90gr JHP Gold Dot (I bought 1box of GD) to go with the new Bersa 380 Duo Tone with Crimson Trace grips I bought for my wife. Wally World has a little pistol ammo coming in , but I always seem to check with them after they sell out of it all...

First let me say I'm pretty impressed that your Wal-Mart's still carry more than a token couple of boxes of ammo, or GOD FORBID! <Gasp> Guns! (Here in N. IL, they stop doing that when they build the new super centers).
Farm & Fleet, however, has finally begun getting back into stock on 9mm and .223, but they are still limiting you to just a couple of boxes.

Here in Houston the local Gander Mountain has plenty of ammo, albiet way overpriced! Same for most gun ranges & pawn shops...

One of the walmart's nearby limits to two boxes of ammo, the other walmart does not.

At Walmart they have had plenty of .22 bulk Federals. In the past six months I've seen maybe ONE box of .380... In the past month or two they usually have a fair supply of .40 S&W always in stock. 9mm is *usually* in stock in small quantities, and getting the 100rnd VP is hit or miss. 45's I'll see maybe one in four times I check...

I refuse to pay jacked up prices at other places for target ammo... I can wait till I see them at Walmart and stock up then. I also reload so.... ;)

I haven't been paying much attention to primers, stocked up before the election. But from the few times I've checked, nobody has them in stock (at reasonable prices at least).

WalMart has really been getting a good amount of 9mm but no 380 of any kind. If you do not purchase when you see it on the shelf it will be gone in a matter of hours.

The LGS here got in so much that he didn't even bother shelving it, just put cases right on the floor in front of the counter. Can't say I blame him.

I'm in Pompano Beach, FL. I visit 2 local walmarts. They have: shotgun ammo. Rifle ammo even .223 and 7.62.

I managed to get a 50rd box of .45 JHP WWB in the last 9 months and 2 100rd boxes of 9mm FMJ. THAT's IT!!! All they have is .40S&W every time I go. And a ton of it... which is why I bought XD(M) .40S&W yesterday :)

I'm in eastern WA, and the local walmarts are still pretty sparse, but the sporting goods stores don't have bare shelves anymore. Really the hardest thing to find right now are hunting calibers, 30-30, 243, and 270 especially

The two local Walmarts have a lot of .40 and some assorted rifle ammo. Haven't seen any .380 or .45 ACP in their shelves in months.

Dick's has ammo most of the time.

I think the .40 gunners may have been on to something. . . :D

I was looking around today and the local walmart had Winchester .45 auto 230 grain JHP's for $28.95 for 50 rounds and a local farm store had Blazer .45 auto 230 grain FMJ's for $21.95 for 50 rounds. Bought a couple of the FMJ's for now. Need to get my stash back up. Funny thing is, everywhere else in this area ammo is really high, the farm store has sold at that price for years now but usually better brands.

For those that have a Sports Authority around, they have full shelves here in Charleston and currently are having a 10% discount on centerfire cartridges. I picked up a couple box of 30 06 Remington Core Lokt discounted to $17.49 plus tax even though their sale sign said Winchester ammo was on sale. :)

AMmo Shortage?

Here in MD, I have 4 Wallys within 20 mins of my house and 2 of them have consistently been stocked (even 380) and the other two --- nada most trips. Either my timing is very bad or very good depending which way the ammo gods point me. Got enough of everything I need for my rifles and handguns (22/38/9/357/45/380/223/308/7.62) so I don't make the circuit as much anymore. My supply took a while to build but I got it built. Like others have said, its out there - if you want to pay, if not, patience and persistence is the key. Funny how the same company can be so different inventory in same area..???? :scrutiny:

Around here, it's still bare shelves for the most part. I've been getting my ammo online for months now. It's a waste of time to even look at Walmart. Academy Sports sems to be getting more but finding 38/357 380 or 45acp is still tough.

I, too, see more bare shelves than anything else, and I do a lot of ammo cruising during the course of a week. I'll stumble into a box or two of 9mm from time to time, and the odd .40 S&W, but I sure as shootin' don't see much of anything else -- especially in an quantity. As for .380? Forget it, unless you've said your prayers and done your homework and taken out the garbage and cut the grass and shined your shoes and made your bed. And even then you don't see it. I'd sure like to know where it's all gone.

Best time to go to Walmart is in the morning since they get their shipments at night and stock at that time too... ;)

I can get a ready supply of 115gr. 9mm Blazer by the case (20 boxes) for $200.00, this is what I've been feeding my G-17, which has become my main shooter since I've been stockpiling my .45 ACP ammo, so the SW1911 and Sig P220 won't get as much exercise until the ammo shortage subsides
