Ammo Prices

I been shooting for 40 years and while firearms go up a LITTLE ammo is going up a LOT. Stock up when you can, it won't get cheaper.:mad:

My dealer told me the same thing this weekend. Said that prices across the board are going up 15% and I should expect .223 to go up 20%.:banghead:

This is retarded. I guess ill go get a couple bricks of .22. Looks like thats all ill be shooting.

Not that this is much comfort, but shooting .22 is a Great way to work on your fundamentals.

Futuristic

WOLF 7.62x39 ammo Dealer cost is now $179.95 +freight
Russian Golden Tiger brand
$139.95 + freight

Not that this topic hasn't been beaten to death.....but more and more i'm thinking that it's a shooter induced price hike.

Sure, there's tons of valid reasons for the price to go up, but I think the reason that takes the cake is that shooters are getting scared and willing to pay the price....the higher the price the more it seems we all want to stock up.

I've got a decent enough stockpile, waiting on an order of 10k .223 rnds and then i think i'm done for awhile.

I'll either be glad I waited or use what I have left to teach myself a lesson about not stocking up...

My gun dealer just informed me that as of sept 1st,, another 15% increase in ammo prices. Stock Up.

OK, you scared me, so I just ordered another 5,000 .380 bullets.:)

I'm not an economist, but I do remember supply/demand day back in business school. Something about the demand fuels the price of most elastic goods...like ammo.

Go ahead and stock up. That increases the demand and thusly the price, and you're telling all the folks who are making $$$ off your purchase that you support their price hike. The best possible thing you can do is find a SUBSTITUTE good, like reloading your own ammo. Just like gasoline... you want to hurt the oil company? Then stop buying oil, use ethanol.... or ride a bike.

You fellas ever heard of grey poupon mustard? The original price, in the early 80's was about that of regular old yellow mustard....nobody bought it. Kraft doubled the price just before dropping the product, and demand for their mustard skyrocketed. They could only conclude that the price gave folks the illusion of some sort of delicacy. If you think about it, it's true. I won't ever buy a Kia car because they're way cheaper. I haven't heard anything that horrible about them, but they're too inexpensive to be reliable. If they were a good product at that price, they'd have many competitors.

The marketing department at Winchester know the grey poupon story and they're taking the demand for ammo to mean "maybe the increase in sales is due to folks thinking our ammo is more reliable, or that television ad that we just put out is doing well... or that Patrick Flanigan's shenanigans with clay pigeons is getting folks to buy our AA shotshells."

Let the ammo manufacturers/retailers know exactly what you're thinking, find a substitute, like reloading your own. btw... primers have gone up, but pistol brass is roughly the same as it's been for a few years IIRC, and lead bullets are definitely the same price as they always have been. Powder has gone up about $1 a lb....and I think that's more inflationary.

You'll be well prepared for the anorexic midget zombie invasion.

No, I'll still be shooting 32ACP-45ACP for about $3.00/50 when you guys are complaining about spending $40 for a box of your favorite factory pistol ammo.:neener:

Anybody shooting $58/1,000 com block ammo? I am.:)

The Rucker pistol bullets that I've been loading for years have increased in price from $14-$16/500 to over $25 and are steady going up and other brands are higher.

Powder that I was buying at gun shows last year for $14 a pound is over $20 now.

Primers have increased from $10-$12 to over $20 a brick.

But it still only costs about $4.50/50 to load 45ACP.:)

Well, I'll admit I don't shoot much com bloc stuff. I do however load massive amounts of 5.56 75gr Hornady OTM for way less than people pay for crapola M855 surplus.

Didn't you get the memo on being hush-hush about reloading gloating? We don't want everyone getting on-board and driving up prices.:D

I understand that.:)

But like I told my friend at the last couple gun shows, I feel sorry for shooters on a limited budget the way ammo costs are climbing.:(

Just hold on. Things will change with the surplus ammo market. It always does after folks load up and stop buying. - supply and demand again.

I wish I knew someone who could show me their reloading station in person.
I read all the info but I do not process well this way. I am basically poor and buying WWB is about to bust my bank. I would love to be able to reload
9mm, .40S&W, and .38 special.

I am glad I am a big fan of .22 LR as even with a 15% increase they are still affordable.

Im283 Reloading of pistold rds is easy. IMO there are two presses to consider. (only because I have owned both) :) The Dillion SDB or if price is issue the LEE 1000. Both will make quality ammo. The Dillion is a solider/better built press. The priming on my Lee has never been quite (right) If on the Lee it does not feel right on upstroke I give it a second nudge otherwise I have high primer. (at first I had one high primer per 20 now very seldom and I KNOW it before I put powder in)
The Lee has a neat case holder. You load the tubes with empty (cleaned) brass and it automaticly loads them into press so you can concentrate on loading. You also do not have to fill primer pick up tubes as it loads primers from flip tray. I (feel) I can load quicker with the Lee. (I consider timing reloading a safety violation)
Both presses deprime and reprime cases, drop powder charge (and allow you to remove primed case with powder to double check powder amount. THen allow you to replace primed/powered case for next step) both are auto index. (rotates shell to next station) and both require you to set bulled on primed/powdered case and then kick loaded rd into hopper.
It really is simple. Get a case guage (or remove barrel do drop a sample of finished rds into) and don't lood more then a dozen the first time. Check them over well and shoot them. Then make changes till happy and load volume. (doing checks that primers properly seated, powder charge is correct, bullet cimped properly, and it drops in chamber well)

edit to add. I am seriously considering buying another Lee 1000 for .223 Cost is under $150 and I am too lazy to change shell plate/die settings between pistol/rifle. Of course with rifle case length is bigger issue.
Another thing to consider is buying a used Dillion. Lifetime warrenty. :)
