Ammo shortage article on local news, stock up now!

Now everyone run out and buy more to increase the demand and make the shortage worse!

Nothing brings down prices like increased demand.
Don't know what caliber you're shooting, but you hit the bullseye with this one. ;)

Buy what you've always bought and in the amounts you've always bought it.

At this point the prices have gone up. Buying MORE than normal at higher than normal prices makes no sense. It cost you more and drives the demand (and the prices) higher. That causes others to panic, buy more than normal and the spiral continues. We can keep this shortage going for a long time if gun owners keep "cooperating" to keep driving demand up.

Let's say that when you would normally buy a box of ammo you buy two instead because of the shortage. Let's say that all gun owners do that. We just doubled the demand for ammunition in the U.S. and we didn't even need a war to pull it off.

I guess we now finally have the answer to that age old question "what caliber for SHTF" apparently it's 22lr, because thats about all that many folks could afford:uhoh:

a couple of years ago, I only reloaded 308 and 44 mag/45 colt mostly for superior accuracy. Now I am in my basement cranking out 9mm and 223 (and many more), two calibers I never thought I would ever need to reload. If things keep going how they are, you will see a bunch of sad gunnies hammering out the dents in 22 cases:(

Officer trainees shot 25 rounds - opposed to the usual 60.
Anybody else see this? And we're supposed to feel safe unarmed since the well-trained police to protect us?

On-topic: It will be interesting to see if the prices come back down after the war ends. I've heard some of the "old-timers" refer to ammo prices being higher in the past, so unless they're taking a page from the oil/gas companies...

I just got a press and have been saving brass for a few months. Next is dies and components, then I'm 'cashing out' of the commercial ammo game...

Many of us have seen the letters sent by Remington, Winchester, and CCI/Federal announcing the ammunition price increase.

All three ammunition manufacturers explained that the increase results from the increasing cost of raw materials over the years. Not one of the manufacturers named the war as a factor.

lets see, ammo in short supply so price goes up. Price goes up so we feel the need to hoard ammo. Hoarding causes supplys to run short so price goes up, price goes up we hoard ammo.

viscous cycle will never end

I saw an article on the net about how ammo mfrs are expecting a reduction in demand from the Fedgov due to expected reduction/phase out of operations in Iraq. The Big 5 here had a sale on WWB 9mm FMJ @ $10/box so I bought 5. Yeah, I realize that FMJ isn't serious defensive ammo. Realistically speaking I have shot thousands of rounds in practice and none at a human target (Thank God- hope it stays that way). Unless some unbelieveably horrific turn of events occurs one could expect 100 rds of social ammo in any given caliber to be a lifetime supply after having verified reliability for a given gun. That said I plan to set up and resume reloading.

The great thing about reloading is that in the unlikely circumstance price goes back to 04 levels, you can put the el-cheapo caliber dies away, and buy surplus, and just handload match ammo and expensive calibers. There is a proportionately larger cost savings in reloading now than even just a year ago. Component costs tend to rise with ammo, but are not as affected by shortages, and do not raise as much, for example, 2 years ago a box of 230gr 45acp WWB ran $12, it cost me $6 to load a box with win fmj bullets, now that same wwb is $22, and it cost me $9 to load the same, but I can always switch to plated bullets to load for $7 a box, or even cast my own for $4 a box if things get worse, you can even stock large ammounts of one particular bullet shared by many chambrings, I use nosler 168gr HPBT .308 for 308 win, 30-06, and 300 mag, and keep about 1500 on hand to load what I need.

Yes, the price of metals is going up, but it shouldn't affect all ammo to the point that Wolf 7.62x39 is $7/box like I've seen. This stuff isn't gold. Dealers are hiking up prices because the SHTF crowd and conspiracy theorists seem to think that the ammo is going to magically "dry up". Heck, I have an 8x56 mauser and I can STILL find ammo for it, even though it hasn't been produced in any large quantity since early WW2. None of this stuff is going away. Don't buy ammo at high prices. Buy from those who keep the prices closest to what they were. Frankly, if all the US manufacturers are going to hike prices 30%, then I'm going to buy foreign made ammo. If not wolf, then whatever "bete rousse de jour" is cheapest. If production costs in the US are raised by 30%, then I'm going to buy from a country where they pay their workers 30% less to make up the difference. If ammo prices are going to be hiked up that much, I want to see a substantial increase in ammo quality too- I had better get gold bullets primed with the blood of first-borns and lacquered in Jurassic-period sap.

This same garbage happened last year at this time too. :scrutiny:

Why would the rising cost of metals NOT affect the cost of Wolf ammo?
They still use lead in their bullets and I'm also curious as to what country you'll be buying your ammo from if American made ammo is too expensive and Russian ammo is too expensive?

And where can I find me some of that Jurassic style lacquer?
Sounds perfect for my Tyrannosaur loads:D

Romania or former Yugoslavia.

We had a rental property broken into about 2 months ago. It was vacant and guess what was stolen? The copper from the plumbing, A/C unit, even the ice maker line was stolen.

Metal is most definetely rising at an alarming rate. As a matter of fact, last time I checked, you could get $4 worth of copper from 138 (pre 1982) pennies (1lb.). Melting currency is illegal of course but I think you can get the point. :uhoh:

I've been stocking up on ammo, mostly 7.62x54r

and a ton of .22LR value packs.

If the local TV news is reporting on it...

...then my $$$ is on the problem starting to get better, not worse.

I do not know if it is getting any better. I'm slowly receiving inventory from Winchester and Federal that I ordered in the last quarter of 06.

So far I have not received a single bullet of orders placed this year. I get the same old check back in 90 or 120 days story.

I have enough inventory to last about two weeks and I will be out of business until ammo arrives.

Right now, I've got enough 357 mag and 40 S&W reload's to provide me about 2 years worth of shooting at 50 rounds/week. My case of Wolf 7.62 will easily last a year, as will my case of Wolf 30 carbine, for the newly aquired Universal 30 carbine.:D

If Hillary gets elected, then its going to be a shopping spree, here's what I'm thinkin'::D

8 lbs of Unique
2000 Rem 357 SJHP bullets (reloading)
2000 Ranier 155 grain bullets for the 40 (reloading)
1000 rds of Wolf 7.62
1000 rds Wolf 30 carbine
2500 rds of 22 LR
1 case of Primers, maybe 2.:D

If the gun-banning b**** gets elected, than the above would keep me shooting for a good while.:D
