Scouting Trip

Recent "scouting trip" to Sportsmans warehouse and two WalMarts in the Columbia, SC area.

Results: Diddly, squat and naada. (Virtually) no ammo, no primers, no shot, no powder, no brass and no bullets. Sportsmans had 3 aisles of empty shelves.

:banghead:

I live in Western WA and have been making twice weekly trips to WM as I drive right by one on the way to work. I have been doing this for about two months and the first couple of weeks I found nothing but empty shelves. Recently, at least one trip per week has been fruitful. I have been picking up 22lr, 9, and 40. In the last six weeks, I have managed 250rds of 9, 550rds of 40 and a little over 2k of 22lr. I alway go first thing in the am around 8. Went to the WM by my house last night and they were unloading a case each of WWB VP in 9, 380, 40 and 45.

Personally, I think SW is on the verge of going bankrupt, they don't have the capital to carry much inventory anyway. The local SW out here has been a complete joke for the last year. They can't even keep Marlin lever action rifles on the shelf, only had a handful of those.

Agreed Sportsman's Warehouse doesn't have anything to sell here in NM either.

There is no ammo shortage..............

that is the conclusion I came to today being at a gunshow.Multiple dealers with stacks and cases of every type of caliber. The thing is though, crazy priced stacks of ammo.

So the real deal is there is only a shortage of reasonable priced ammo.I bought two empty ammo cans thats it,and even they were price high I think.Gunshow dealers also had sticker shock pricing on AR's and AK's.Guess they refuse to confess that panic buying is ending yet.May they enjoy repacking to take back home all the stuff they brought to sell........

Same exact thing happened to me in West Palm Beach. No ammo shortage. The gunshow dealers had crates of everything at crazy prices. I'll wait a month or 2 and see if they get a hint after alot of heavy lifting..

That's it right there. The only "shortage" that exist is as a result of people like these dealers who are obviously being bulk at places like Walmart and Dicks and then trying to resell for obscene prices. Just like the guys from the local shops that come and buy cases of ammo as it comes off the truck. Now I'm sure it still wouldn't stay on the shelves long even if this wasn't happening, but it would at least make it to the shelves, and for longer than and hour or two, if these people would stop trying to exploit the situation.

Ammo Gouging, not at Walmart

I picked up 6 boxes of Federal 9mm fmj jacket ammo at Walmart this am and was surprised that it was only $8.69 per box of 50.

Every other place I've seen ammo at recently was asking 2-1/2 to three times the price I paid at Walmart.

Some people don't like Walmart for a variety of reasons, but as far as I'm concerned the fact that Walmart isn't trying to gouge us on ammo like everyone else seems to be doing speaks highly of the company.

The problem isn't the price ... at WallyWorld, anyway. The problem is availability. I've gone 6 months now without seeing a single box of .380 at any WallyWorld in the state, and I've been looking. I've gone 3 months now without seeing any 9mm of any stripe. The only thing I've found of late was two boxes, a week apart, of .32 ACP Winchester WB; at least it was offered at the usual rate.

So I have to ask:
Why do people call it Wally World?
This isn't National Lampoon's Vacation..

(Sorry, I get a little irritated when I hear someone say (or type) 'Wally World' because an old coworker of mine always said it..That guy was jacka$s.)

Ditto on availability. The Wal*Marts around here sell WWB 9mm 100 count for $19.88, but they rarely have it in.

I have seen some obscene prices. Natchez was selling 9mm for $30 a box of 50 - FMJ a few weeks ago. Their price is now down to something reasonable - like $15 or so. Still, if the suppliers are selling it for that much, what can the small retailers do? Wal*Mart contracts with the manufacturers directly, I think that accounts for the lack of fluctuation in their pricing. I think some of the small retailers were not gouging, the distributors were.

Why do people call it Wally World

Because if you don't think God has a sense of humor, visit Walmart for an hour.

It's like an carnival complete with side shows.

I could be wrong, but I believe people were calling it "WallyWorld" long before that movie.

Do you also get irritated when people say "Mickey D's" instead of McDonalds? ;)

Ammo Gouging

Well, there certainly is gouging at other gun shops.

I can usually get 100 rds of WWB ammo at Walmart for 20 bucks. My brother and I stopped in a small gun shop in Goldsboro, NC this past weekend and they had the same 100 rd WWB ammo for $42!!!
